  Since the year 2003 I own a company called JJMS, which stands for Jorrit Jouwsma Maritime Services. During the first years I sailed as a skipper on many sailing ships, but during the time my interest shifted to coaching aspiring skippers and helping owners to get familiar with their ship and the responsibilities that come with it. It is my goal to let people enjoy sailing their ship instead of having stress during every manoeuvre. A second area of interest is advising shipowners with regard to plans for (re)building their ships. At first I was interested in the rigging of sailing vessels only, but my interest has shifted more and more to the on board management of energy. Currently me and my girlfriend are rebuilding our own ship, a dutch sailing cargo vessel, built in 1896. Show less

I was involved at the newbuilding of 8 large cutter suction dredgers, built at the Dalian Liaonan Shipyard (China). My responsibility was to manage all logistics and quality issues regarding the transport of the European manufactured parts to China.   During my job at Bronkhorst I was first introduced to what has become my main area of professional interest: The development of processes. During my employment I introduced Lean Manufacturing to the company, starting with the reorganisation of a single production cell. After two years of implementing and improving, the output had almost doubled and the lead time was only 30% of its original. In my last year at the company, I was involved in the designing of a new production facility.
