I am the Finnish member in the new joint ACER-CEER Flexibility task force, which is operating under ACER Electricity working group. The working group is exploring the emergence of Demand-Side Flexibility (DSF) and the appropriate market and regulatory arrangements in order to introduce DSF to the electricity markets on a wider scale. My task was to study the regulatory and market requirements for the deployment of demand flexibility in the Nordic energy markets. I designed a market model, enabling the operation of this new technology, which can be implemented in the current market structure. The design of the model is based on first mapping the possible market arrangements, after which each of these schemes is analyzed individually in order to determine the optimal outcome. The main challenges have been in removing the injurious effects to third parties, clarifying the role of balance responsibility and the measurement and verification of flexibility. I also take a stand at the appropriate pricing of demand response considering total welfare. Show less

    • Trainee, Energy Markets
      • Jun 2014 - Mar 2015

During my tainee period at the Finnish Energy Authority, Energiavirasto in the energy markets team I had a very central role in the ramp up of the wholesale energy market surveillance structure in accordance with the REMIT-regulation ( EU N:o 1227/2011). My tasks varied from considering the technical implementation and ensuring functional operation of the system to communicating with the various Finnish energy companies´ representatives in order to assist them in the adaptation of the new system.I was also responsible for compiling the yearly report assessing the reliability of the delivery of energy during the winter season 2014-2015. The report took into account the current energy production capacity in Finland as well as the grid capacities from other countries assessing the risk of energy shortages. The paper focuses on my calculated estimation for the available energy production capacity and the effects of possible disturbances in the grid or power production facilities.Summary of my personal skills improved in this task:-Further knowledge in the Nordic energy markets-Competence in the European regulatory operations-Working in collaboration with foreign energy professionals in the neighbouring countries and Brussels-Further understanding of the power production and grid structures in Finland. I worked in the ABB Motors & Generators sourcing team and my main tasks consisted of purchasing, cooperating with the various foreign suppliers and consignment tracking. The task required apprehension of motors and generators, and an ability to perceive the detailed industrial machinery using mechanical drawings. I also took part in the daily meetings of the production managers´ problem solving team, where my responsibility was to resolve any problems relating to material shortages. In practice this means for instance finding and delivering a component at a very short notice for a product which is due to be delivered within days. The components usually had a lengthy delivery time. As a result of this, the high paced resolving of these problems required good communication skills and maintaining good relations with the various suppliers around the world. In addition to my daily tasks, I also took part in various long-term development projects in our unit focusing on cost reduction and improving the efficiency of the operations. As a result of these projects, I created a new tool for monitoring and communicating the material shortages and revised the process instructions. Summary of my personal skills improved in this task: -Mechanical knowledge regarding motors and generators. -Working under pressure and a tight schedule -Working in a multi-cultural environment, using different languages (Finnish, English, German, Swedish) -Further knowledge in using SAP for engineering purposes -Independent work in development projects Show less
