Practicum Student
-
Aug 2017 - Dec 2017
Participated as a practicum student for BREATHE and the Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy, an organization that serves as community advocates interested in promoting lung health and healthy environments through research and education, working with local communities to empower them to make change, policy development, and access to health services.Managed a project to create and implement a survey with the purpose of documenting the current active smoke-free public park policy in place within each county/city/community in response to a trend of this type of policy being passed within communities even though the state was not fully covered in indoor settings. Created a protocol, communicated with local community representatives that could help disseminate the survey, developed visual aids to help present the data once data collection was complete, and contacted referrals.Contributed to the weekly newsletter sent out to community partners to inform them on smoke-free policy research updates. Participated in advocacy at the state capital, attending the launch of the Coalition for a Smoke-Free Tomorrow and observing a press conference about the project's goal to push to increase the excise tax on cigarettes in Kentucky by at least $1. Assisted in creation of a decision tree to help communities assess whether they are ready for an outdoor smoke-free policy. The decision tree also provided important information on the importance trying to pass indoor policy first, as well as some quick facts from the literature on smoke-free policy.Developed knowledge of the literature on smoke-free policy to assist in evidence-based completion of these projects.
