Sep 2016 - Apr 2017
Once per week I meet with a group of first year students on the Computer Games Programmingcourse. During these informal sessions we discuss topics related to the course and the gamesindustry, for example, difficulties faced whilst trying to solve a particular problem or tutorials onusing the Unity game engine. These weekly meetings have helped significantly improve my socialconfidence as they are often structured in a similar fashion to a lecture, and prove that I can handlemyself in situations which are outside my comfort zone. Junior Programmer
-
Oct 2015 - Aug 2016
Fuzzy Frog is a work-for-hire smartphone application development studio who develop games and mental health applications; I worked there for a year as part of my undergraduate degree. During my time I worked on two released products: Feel Stress Free and Mr Grouch’s Lawn Invasion; both were developed using Unity and C#, and provided me with the necessary experience to take me from a hobbyist to a professional level Unity developer. Upon joining I was introduced to the concept of agile development in the form of scrum, and have since become quite the advocate of this flexible development style. Throughout the penultimate months of the placement I was given the responsibility of leading my own project as the main programmer, indicating that I was trusted to work independently and without the need of supervision. Working in the games industry for a year provided me with invaluable experience that I would have otherwise missed out on; it is not unreasonable to argue that I learnt more during this year than the previous two years at university combined, and furthered my desire to continue working in this fascinating industry. Spelunky Assistant
-
Jan 2015 - Apr 2015
As the Spelunky Assistant I was required to help with the preparation and coordination of a public programming competition for SpelunkBots, an AI API designed for the game Spelunky, which was hosted by the staff from the University of Derby. The competition was reliant upon an existing code-base that was released to competitors which allowed them to interface with the game. My responsibilities included adding new features to the code-base as directed by the project coordinator, assisting with the construction and maintenance of the public website, managing the public GitHub repository and responding to issues raised by external developers.
