Topic : Formal argumentation models for online debates. Online debate platforms are based on the idea that better collective decision-making may emerge thanks to articulated debate. However, these platforms remain typically only conceived as vizualisation and argument mapping tools. There exists opportunities though to exploit formal argumentation theory to improve these tools and better capture the dynamics of these debates, for instance to guarantee a fairer exposure of exchanged arguments, or avoid malicious behaviours. The objective of this PhD thesis is to investigate how formal argumentation theory and computational social choice can be exploited to guarantee a fairer representation and regulation of debates. In particular the PhD student will work on two research questions. First, how to propose a better summary of the coherent points of view by proposing new semantics that guarantee the diversity of points of view (e.g. diversity of the sources). Second, how to obtain a better organization of the debate by proposing and studying different ways to present arguments. Show less

The aim of this project is to build a set of regulatory tools to identify the biases and unfairness generated by digital platform algorithms (algorithms for pricing products and services, and algorithms for recommending products, services and content). Over the last 2 and a half years, I have developed a library of state-of-the-art audit algorithms.
