I am developing and optimizing a protocol to isolate and enumerate viruses from coral mucus in the lab of Dr. Adrienne Correa. I have been awarded The Clara Carter Higgins Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship in order to travel to Mo'orea, French Polynesia this May to use this protocol to examine viral dynamics during coral bleaching.

I participated in a 5-day cruise to the FGBNMS to collect water and tissue samples in order to examine the effects of the freshwater run-off from Hurricane Harvey on reef health in the East and West banks of the sanctuary. I assisted in collection and processing of water samples in preparation for chemical and transcriptomic analysis and collaborated with scientists and scientific divers from NOAA and Moody Gardens.

I characterized symbiont communities in corals of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary using restriction fragment length polymorphism digests and Illumina sequencing, created species lists of the birds and fish of mangrove and salt marsh ecosystems in the Texas Gulf Coast for use in eDNA analysis, and designed and constructed a vacuum trap for use in processing large volumes of water.
