My research focuses on the design and synthesis of Nanomaterials related to the field of catalysis. Current projects are pertaining to bifunctional catalyst design for metal air batteries, as well as novel anode/cathode design and fabrication methods. The work completed focused on understanding SO2 oxidation kinetics and how this applies to and affects diesel exhaust catalyst systems. Currently an oxidation catalyst is placed upstream of NOX control systems and this oxidation catalyst can and does oxidize SO2 to SO3, which is highly corrosive. The kinetics of the SO2 oxidation reaction were determined. This was done by combining IR thermography, mass spectrometry, FTIR gas-phase analysis and degradation kinetic analysis. These effects are critical in developing physically relevant kinetic models. Show less

Chemical Analysis Lab - trained in sample preparation and digestion and carbon and sulfur analysis of metal samples. Also be exposed to sample analysis on the ICAP. Mechanical Lab - trained on Charpy impact, tensile, hardness and bend testing on metal samples. Exposed to mechanical testing on non-metallic materials. Physical Lab - trained on salt spray, humidity, flammability, coating weight, cleanability, and odour testing and sample preparation. These tests are typically performed on parts for the automotive industry. Metallurgical Lab - trained to section, mount and polish test specimens that will then be evaluated for properties such as grain size, microstructure and other properties that may be used in failure investigations. Exposure to the evaluation procedures using the microscopes and image analysis system and trained to perform routine tests. Show less
