Jordan's combination of concern for his students and passion for the subject made him a great teacher at St. John's.

Jordan Adair was a passionate teacher who connected with students on a deeper level. He would take whatever time was necessary to reach students and help them become proficient readers and writers and successful individuals.

One of the classes I teach at Durham Academy is called The Literary and Artistic Response to War. Over the fall semester during which I teach this senior English elective, we study literary and artistic responses to the Vietnam War and the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to literary responses to war, we study war photography, film, visual art, music, and other subjects related to the American military experience, both active service and veterans affairs. A key part of this class are the visits by local military veterans and active duty personnel, all of whom come to share their stories of service. We also participate in the Veterans History Project, conducting interviews with those who visit my class. These interviews ultimately become part of the National Archives at the Library of Congress. My primary goal in this class is to expose my students to the various artistic responses to war, to critique those responses, and to give them as close to a first-hand sense of what the experiences are like for soldiers who serve by bringing in military personnel to tell their stories. After arriving at DA in 1995, I coached the boy's varsity basketball team for five years before stepping down to concentrate on my teaching and working to establish an Early Intervention Team. That team, called "Assist," was formed in 2006 with its primary goal to help students and other in the DA community who might be struggling with alcohol and other drugs. It is now a fully fleshed out part of DA's Wellness program. I was also the Upper School coordinator in the English department from 2004-2008 before becoming the department chair in 2008. I stepped down as department chair in 2015 and so thet I could concentrate on my teaching and working with Wellness programming. I established an AP Art History course in 2009 and have been teaching it ever since. Show less
