- Planned and negotiated with my supervisor to develop strategic approaches for my research project. Received funding to perform RNA-sequencing experiments.- Established effective teaching strategies and successfully trained 4 undergraduates and 2 Masters students to be confident and competent in performing experimental protocol and analysis with limited supervision. - Explained protocols, demonstrated laboratory techniques in person and with instructional videos, supervised and supported the students on trouble-shooting experimental errors and scientific report writing. All students achieved first-class grades for their project. - Used trouble-shooting and problem solving skills to optimise laboratory procedures. Produced high quality data and images for at least 5 potential publications.I am currently writing my PhD thesis titled, Triggered Pluripotency during Kalanchoe Plantlet Development. The introduction of my thesis includes a review of literatures on the use of Kalanchoe plants in different research fields, plant reproduction, with specific focus on asexual reproduction and current knowledge on the mechanisms of Kalanchoe asexual plantlet formation. My thesis also detailed genetic transformation of Kalanchoe daigremontiana to produce transgenics plant in just 6 months. I did this placement as part of my undergraduate degree at the University of Tsukuba in the Laboratory of Plant Physiology & Metabolism. As a placement student, I performed my own research project with guidance from other students. I participated in weekly routine lab maintenance work and seminars. I made a presentation to report progress of my research project on a monthly basis. My supervisor was very satisfied with my performance and has offered me a position in the lab after graduation but I kindly rejected his offer as I wished to stay in Manchester for personal reasons. From the placement, I have: - Enhanced time management and organisational skills by working independently on my own research project. Working independently also helped me to develop self-discipline and motivation and this in turn allowed me to achieve desired progress every month. - Developed patience and critical thinking skills to solve problems encountered when conducting experiments and managed to obtained accurate and reproducible results. - Improved presentation skills by including suitable and appropriate amount of content while delivering progress report presentation every month. Ensured that audience pay attention and understand the content delivered by maintaining eye-contact with the audience and communicate with simple and clear explanation whilst keeping a suitable pace. - Adapted quickly to the working environment in a country that speaks a foreign language and with different cultures through being questioning and open-minded. - Improved confidence in communication and presentation by voluntarily deliver a presentation using a foreign language that took only 9 months to learn via actively engaging in conversations with colleagues and friends using the language.
