Became the Lead Horticulturist of Toledo Botanical Garden when Metroparks took over operations in 2017. Responsible for maintaining the 2-acre Woodland Garden which includes the nationally accredited Hosta Collection, Rhododendron Collection, Woodland Pond, and areas of ferns & wildflowers; Also oversee The Daylily Walk/collection. Oversee the documentation of over 9,000 plantings of 2,300 taxa managing all plant curatorial records & collection policies/procedures at TBG including accreditation standards, annual reporting/renewals, as well as the database, labels, accession tags, and maps. Served as Project Director of a 3-year IMLS grant for collection improvements including transitioning to aluminum plant labels, intern funding to help implement GIS mapping at TBG, and acquiring an automated embosser. Coordinate the work for over 500 hours annually from volunteers in areas I oversee, train & direct interns & seasonals assisting me, and collaborate with associate organizations based on-site including OSU Extension and multiple plant societies, serving as the liaison to the Black Swamp Hosta & Daylily Society. Present talks for local organizations, guide tours, and assist with other educational programming & interpretation projects including signage & social media. Create the What’s In Bloom at TBG lists for the website and occasionally contribute to local TV news segments as well as newspapers & magazine articles. Serve as the institutional historian as the longest-serving staff member at TBG. Report to the Park Services Supervisor at TBG, work with 4 other full-time staff based at the 60-acre site, and help conduct day-to-day operations of leaf blowing, hedging/pruning, applying chemical, setting irrigation, plowing snow, and help maintain a half-acre production greenhouse shared with USDA-ARS. Design & install annual displays. Assist with planning new landscapes at other parks in the district including the new Glass City Metropark.

Garden Maintenance: Was the Horticulturist for the 1 acre Perennial Garden from 2008-2011; Designed & maintained over 2,500 sq. ft. of annual displays until 2012 when the Plant Records Curator position was created; In 2012 began managing the Hosta Collection and continued overseeing The Daylily Walk (since 2008) totaling over 900 taxa combined; Led the expansion of The Daylily Walk and transplanted half the collection to create space for 195 future plants, completed in 2016; Created seasonal displays & setup holiday lights.Plant Records: Modernized the records system, revised policies, and developed a comprehensive Plant Records Procedure Manual for TBG in 2013; Restored accreditation standards & reporting in 2012 after former staff left incomplete; Created the first complete database for 260 tree memorials in 2011 from former administrative staff’s records dating back to the 1960s; Digitized all existing accession maps & ledgers; Conducted collection inventories & record audits updating more than 18,000 database fields over 6 years; Accessioned 1,100 new acquisitions; Operated a label engraver & tag embosser.Supervising: Oversaw an average of over 900 hours annually from volunteers assisting me; Trained at-risk youth from 2008-2010; Served as the coordinator for TBG’s Horticulture Intern Program 2010-2012; In 2012 began serving as the staff liaison for BSHDS.Outreach: Gave over 80 educational presentations & group garden tours, interviewed in more than 50 local TV news segments about gardening and wrote 110 short articles for TBG’s websites & newsletters.Events/Other: Assisted with TBG’s Crosby Festival of the Arts, plant sales, Toledo GROWs Seed Swap, Heralding the Holidays and other events that supported TBG’s nonprofit operations; Stayed committed during transitions having 4 different supervisors over a 6-year period with each bringing changes to my main responsibilities during some of the most understaffed & financially challenging years.
