Delivering close to 100,000 meals a year and housing nearly 100 people a night, UGM has provided hope for so many in Sacramento, CA. My role: As Public Relations Manager I wear many hats: development, communications, and community relations. I primarily steward and grow our $4,000,000 development pipeline. This includes donor communications, donor solicitation, and donor stewardship. I provide high level strategic planning for the development department in order to find new revenue and create strong community partnerships. I also manage all external marketing and communication efforts to our three key stakeholders: donors, volunteers, and community members. My impact: After a thorough review of our current donor portfolio and fundraising practices, I concluded that the current area of revenue growth for UGM was online giving. I have begun implementing three new initiatives to close the growth gap: (1) convert existing gifts by check into gifts by credit card (2) convert current one-time online gifts to monthly gifts and (3) create meaningful online content to capture new online gifts. My primary responsibility was to steward and grow our $500,000 regional pipeline of current and new donors. This included donor prospecting, donor communication, grant writing, grant reporting, community partnerships, and brand development. Maintaining our external communication was instrumental in stewarding our pipeline. I managed all digital marketing which included, but not limited to, social media, email marketing and our regional website. My impact: I was instrumental in the leadership and strategic direction of the California Capital Valley (CCV) region becoming an Alumni Innovation Region (shifting the focus towards fully supporting and investing in TFA’s alumni network of educational equity-oriented leaders in the Sacramento area). Through new media initiatives, grant proposals, and marketing collateral, I was able to capture the new narrative about our region into a compelling pitch for prospective and existing stakeholders.

Each agency receives the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) in service of alleviating the causes and conditions of poverty in their community. My role: As Events and Marketing Manager I planned, developed, and executed all in person and digital events. Some of these in person events included two annual gatherings: Legislative Day and CalCAPA Annual Conference. Happening in Sacramento, Legislative Day was an opportunity for CalCAPA to invite state legislators to meet with our members and learn about the needs of our local Community Action agencies. The annual conference was focused on our network’s senior and executive leadership. My role in these events was to lead logistics from planning to execution. This included negotiating contracts with vendors, communicating with board sub-committees, and promoting the event to our members. For digital events, I would utilize GoToWebinar or Zoom to facilitate state-wide conversations and training amongst our members. This might also include legislators, policy leaders, subject matter experts, or community leaders. Topics would range from housing policy to COVID-19 responses. My impact: I was able to successfully negotiate contracts with event vendors that significantly reduced the cost of event planning from previous years. Under my guidance, the weekly newsletter was revamped and redone to increase audience engagement. The state-wide digital events I led were incredibly successful with high attendance and valuable takeaways. Show less

My role: I founded Hmongmentum in 2017 because I saw a gap between Hmong-American professionals and Hmong-American college students. Being Hmong-American myself, I know the difficulty of trying to navigate the professional world without mentors or leaders that look like me. This was, unfortunately, true for many other Hmong-American students. To meet this challenge, I wanted to build momentum in the Hmong community by investing in our college students and young professionals by exposing them to successful Hmong-American leaders and influencers. This idea eventually turned into an annual conference titled, Hmongmentum Convention (HCON), where students and professionals came together to hear inspiring talks, engaging panels, and value packed workshops. I planned, managed, and executed the event from beginning to end. This included fundraising, social media marketing, website development, finding sponsors, interacting with vendors, and creating the topics for each session. My impact: I was able to create three HCON events in three separate cities: Fresno, CA (2017), Saint Paul, MN (2018), Sacramento, CA (2019). Each event drew nearly two hundred attendees from around the country. Through online crowdfunding, I was able to raise over $50,000 to kickstart HCON. Several Hmong businesses, content creators, and academics have seen their career start after attending HCON. Show less

My impact: This led me to redesign the WordPress website to provide greater visibility for current products and services, allowing customers to quickly navigate to their desired destination. Social media and email marketing was also re envisioned with the customer in mind. From digital ads to targeted email campaigns, I was able to redirect the company’s online presence to reach new customers and generate new sales. I also initiated several strategic partnerships with local businesses and community partners that led to the creation of a Spring Quarter internship. Interns were local UC Davis students that learned the dynamics of a small business while getting hands-on experience with testing a new product. Show less

My impact: I led recruitment campaigns in over ten California cities that generated over seven hundred new Girl Scout members and two hundred adult volunteers. My Salesforce reports allowed internal staff to quickly and efficiently resolve membership related problems. The email newsletters I crafted led to increased membership engagement, recruitment, and cookie sales.
