As part of my work with Ararat Meat Exports, I oversaw and co-coordinated the maintenance and the running of all electrical and refrigeration systems throughout the factory. As part of this I was able to maintain, install and design all electrical and refrigeration systems. This includes maintaining and the upgrade all the switchboards, systems and safety systems require to bring these up to Australian Standards. These upgrades have been applied throughout the facility, including cut-up room, slaughter floor, chiller plant (NH3), large freezer storage (R22) and the large Blast Freezer plant (NH3). As a part of maintaining, installation and design of electrical appliance and wiring systems throughout the facility this involves: • The replacement of switchboards, RCDMCB, GPO’s, lighting and the upgrading of systems apparatus; • Modifications as in the insulations of VSD’s, Safety relays and remote start/stops stations for multiple appliance; • Fault finding is a regular occurrence, from basic dead short because of water ingress, to refrigeration valves failing and giving incorrect inputs to a plc or PLC fault. As a part of maintaining the refrigeration plants, checks are made for leaks of refrigerant, oil and water. Other equipment includes checking that cooling tower chemical dosing equipment is working correctly to prevent against legionella. Additionally, this includes monitoring of all temperatures to ensure that all product is kept chilled at 4°C or frozen at -18°C or lower, including that freezers stay below -18°C, regulator defrost are required. Other maintenance activities include: • topping up of refrigerant (if needed); • draining of oil from the ammonia refrigeration systems; • pumping down the plant, so work can be done on systems; • disconnecting, removing and reinstalling compressors for rebuilds; • replacement of valve, oil filters.
