During the final year of my study I was working in a multiage classroom (7- 10 years olds), helping students learn and giving them opportunities to grow. Additionally I was conducting research on the effects of multiage learning on the well being of students. I planned and taught literacy, math and science, supported individuals with diverse learning needs and collaborated with fellow teachers. I taught lessons to two combined classes, following the Peace Heroes curriculum, allowing students to learn social studies through a unique lens of diversity. I experienced Drama- based Pedagogy and outdoor education, participated in daily forest walks and other school wide activities. During the shut down of Kenyan schools due to Covid-19, I participated in various forms of e-learning. The online schooling for the children contained the use of multiple resources, recording of daily videos and live interactions. Due to the strong focus on outdoor education which the school follows, my colleagues and I constantly made an effort to create learning opportunities for students expanding beyond their desktop. During the third year of my study I completed a teaching practice at a British School in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. At the Green Hills Academy I became part of a year 5 classroom, as well as the school community. I was responsible for teaching English, Mathematics, Global Perspective, Science and Health. I assessed students, marked their work, supported individuals, attended staff as well as parent meetings, planned and taught lessons to the whole class. Over the course of ten weeks I became familiar with the Cambridge curriculum and used Active Learn as a tool to support and plan my teaching. I used Quickschool in order to track students progress and share it with their parents. I was able to practice and experience the everyday life of a homeroom teacher by taking over a vast majority of lessons and guiding students through their days. I planned units and developed relationships with my students and fellow colleagues. I had the great opportunity to gain a lot of classroom experience, which allowed for improvements in the areas of instruction, classroom management, subject and curricular knowledge, as well as my pedagogical competence. During the second year of my study I had the opportunity to work at an excellent school, within a diverse context in Bamako, Mali. The focus during my internship was laid on teaching social studies, math and mindfulness. I got to know a variety of different tools, recourses and strategies across the curriculum, which I am sure will help me to become a better teacher overall. I would say one of my biggest improvements took place within my classroom management skills. I was able to learn about a variety of different ways to manage the behavior of students and found out what works best for me and the unique group of children I was working with. My time at AISB was very instructive and I have learned a lot. I was able to establish good relationships with my students and fellow colleagues. This allowed me to learn from as many different individuals as possible. Furthermore I learned about living in a developing country and discovered what it means to be an international educator. Overall the time I spent in Mali was a unique experience which I value a lot. While it was challenging at times, I believe, that I experienced a personal as well as a professional growth as a teacher. Show less
