John has proven very adept at product development and R&D. He has a broad understanding of all parts of the process, from modeling and design through production and testing. He has demonstrated again and again the ability to tackle new and difficult problems, immerse himself in them (becoming well versed in the science/engineering involved), and come out with a deep level of understanding that allows him to drive to useful results. He has been a key owner in some of our most successful products. He represents a truly high level of technical excellence and can be of great value to a very broad range of research and development activities.

As an optical engineer at Brightview, I design microstruture optical films for the lighting industry. These films are used to improve the performance and aesthetics of LED lighting fixtures. At Semprius, we developed ultra high concentration solar cells and modules that posted word record efficiencies. As a senior engineer, I ran the optical test lab. Some of my projects included: -Designed and built the world’s first 4-laser tool for measuring the efficiency of sub-millimeter solar cells. We used this tool in our measurement of a word record 4 junction solar cell. (43.9% efficiency) -Developed computational models (Excel/Matlab) for predicting solar cell performance under varying atmospheric conditions. -Developed finite element thermal models of solar cell performance under highly concentrated light (1600 Suns). Analyzed real-world performance data from multijunction solar panels to guide efficiency and cost improvement efforts. We published world record cell efficiency results in 2013. Show less

My postdoctoral research at Duke focused on the analysis and correction of unwanted image artifacts in PET scans due to patient motion, image noise or other physical phenomena. -Developed algorithms for edge detection in noisy PET images -Developed algorithms for automated correction of motion-induced artifacts in PET/CT scans -Designed and conducted experiments to quantify and improve image quality in PET scans using radiological “phantoms” My postdoctoral research at Duke focused on the analysis and correction of unwanted image artifacts in PET scans due to patient motion, image noise or other physical phenomena. -Developed algorithms for edge detection in noisy PET images -Developed algorithms for automated correction of motion-induced artifacts in PET/CT scans -Designed and conducted experiments to quantify and improve image quality in PET scans using radiological “phantoms”
