For my postdoctoral studies, I moved to the University of York to work on the synthesis of small molecule spirocycles in collaboration with Prof. Richard Taylor and Dr Will Unsworth. Aside from day to day lab-based research and collaborative project input, I helped edit submitted Tetrahedron journals for Elsevier and also organised problem sessions for PhD and Postdoctoral researchers on a weekly basis. I also became part of the Elsevier Advisory Panel. York offered many opportunities to practice public speaking and engaging with both the scientific and non-scientific community. In 2017 I was selected to attend STEM for Britain in Parliament to present my research to a lay audience, and also made it through to the final round of the SCI Retrosynthesis Competition at the SCI headquarters in London. While at York I chaired plenary sessions, introduced visiting academics in front of medium-sized audiences, and attended many conferences and courses including the BOSS symposium (In Antwerp) and the Medicinal Chemistry Resident School (in Loughborough). At the end of my contract, I made the move from academia to industry by getting a position at Pharmaron UK. For selected publications see; J. T. R. Liddon et al, Org. Following my MChem, I moved to Oxford to undertake my DPhil working with Prof. Jeremy Robertson. My DPhil work required many multi-step syntheses on milligram to multi-gram scale, using a wide variety of techniques and transformations. Separation, purification, and identification of complex reaction mixtures by chromatography was a routine occurrence and lent to mechanistic understanding of novel reactions. During this time I developed skills in presenting to small–medium sized audiences, collaborative teamworking, and detailed record keeping. As part of my DPhil, I spent three months on placement at Eli Lilly (Erl Wood) working in an industrial environment. My PhD work resulted in the publication J. Org. Chem. 2019, 84 (21), 13780-13793. Show less

As part of my CASE award funding during my DPhil, I spent three months at Eli Lilly (Erl Wood site) continuing my studies in a professional pharmaceutical environment. I received first-hand experience of what is expected at a professional research level, including the high safety, GLP, and record keeping standards set by these companies. For my Diploma in Industrial Studies during my MChem, I spent one year working at AstraZeneca (Charnwood site) in the process research and development department. My work at Charnwood culminated in co-authorship on a publication: Development of an Extremely Efficient Oxidative Chlorination Reaction: The Value of Routine Data Collection. N. Barnwell, P. Cornwall, D. Horner, J. Knott, J. Liddon. Org. Process Res. Dev. 2010, 14, 278–288.
