       Provide overall strategic policy, technical and managerial direction to the work of the SDM Programme, under the guidance of the Executive Secretary.  Assume overall responsibility for supporting the Regulatory Bodies, regulating the project-based mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol (Regulation of over USD200 billion carbon market).  Guide the senior SDM staff reporting directly to me in relation to the use of financial resources and activities to respond to the needs identified by the intergovernmental bodies, such as, the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the Joint Implementation (JI) Supervisory Committee, and the COP/MOP.  Provide strategic guidance to analytical and technical work on sustainable development mechanisms (CDM, JI and any new additional mechanisms put in place for the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol) as mandated by Parties.  Monitor the contribution of the sustainable development mechanisms to emission reductions and sustainable development through interaction and consultation with a wide range of stakeholders including high-level representatives of governments (Parties), the private sector, observers, and partner organizations including other UN Agencies.  Contribute to the overall management of the Climate Change Secretariat and advising the Executive Secretary on the development of policies and procedures.  Contribute to the mobilization of actions by the private sector, NGOs, IGOs and UN agencies to the realization of the full potential of sustainable development mechanisms and to broaden geographical distribution of CDM and JI project activities. Specific activities included:  Development of a Sustainable Development Blueprint for Qatar Petroleum. This Blueprint described how best the concept of sustainable development could be implemented within QP, as a Corporation.  Developed the concept and managed the implementation of a project to develop a Sustainable Environmental Management Program (SEMP) for Halul Island. The project demonstrated the commitment by Qatar Petroleum to achieve improved standards of management of the environmental impacts of its activities on Halul Island.  Involved in various activities related to the Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM), including: providing advice whenever required; organized an interactive CDM workshop to create awareness of the CDM in Qatar; and prepared a CDM Guidebook for Qatar Petroleum.  Introduced and facilitated the publication of the maiden edition of EV Sustainability Digest, a Quarterly Bulletin on Corporate Sustainability Policy Trends. This technical and policy-oriented quarterly bulletin provided authoritative avenue for disseminating information on sustainable development and related burning issues to the wider QP community. The policy development process included extensive consultative sessions that enabled Senior Management and General Managers of all Anglovaal Operations to develop a common understanding of Sustainable Development.  Liaise with senior officials of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry to facilitate the EMPR approval processes for two new mining projects.  Obtained a Water Use License Authorization for three of our mining projects through liaison with senior officials of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.  Development of a Social Impact Study and identification of possible social interventions for one of Anglovaal new mining projects.  Contribution to the publication of the first Sustainability Report of Anglovaal Mining in 2002 and responsible for the preparation of the second Report the following year.  Compilation of monthly and quarterly SHE Reports, analyzing the safety trends of all Avmin Operations, comparing our safety records with national and international benchmarks, and making recommendations on areas of improvement to the Board, including regular internal and external auditing of Avmin Operations.        Started as Environmental Adviser and rose to the position of Senior Executive at a large private employer organization (South African Chamber of Mines);  Assisting the South African mining industry in developing policies and strategies in the areas of Safety, Health, Environment, HIV-AIDS, and Community Development;  Coordinating the mining industry's input to ongoing debates on environmental issues, both nationally and internationally, including representing the South African government in international negotiations;  Liaison with relevant government departments, collaboration with industry, national, and international bodies, and involvement in the development of industry policy and guidelines.  Coordinating the mining industry’s input into key national legislation and regulatory initiatives, such as, the National Environmental Management Act, National Water Act, the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, National Waste Management Strategy, etc.  Active involvement in the mining industry’s participation in the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa.  Represented the government of South Africa in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations for four years, and becoming the African Chief Negotiator on the Kyoto Flexible Mechanisms.  Active involvement and participation in the Mining Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project. – My Participation included: serving in a small international selection team that selected members of the international Assurance Group for the project, a member of the 6-person international steering group for the Large Volume Waste, Mine Closure and Abandoned Mine component of the project, and as a speaker for one of the sessions at the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) Conference in Toronto where the recommendations of the MMSD Project were formally considered and accepted by all the CEOs of the major mining companies that sponsored the Project.
