I’ve had the enormous pleasure of working with John for well over a decade. He’s a tremendous motivator, leader and collaborator. He consistently delivered excellent results and has superb financial acumen. Most importantly everyone with whom he interacts can’t say enough great things about him. I took my seat on the plane from Portland to NYC. My first trip as a Director of Stores with Bass Shoes. The person sitting next to me said hello and immediately I recognized his voice from previous calls. It was John. I said hello, and those may have been my last words on that flight. My education of who Bass was, who John was and what the team needed was officially underway! What stuck me the most that day and then regularly for over 20 years working together with John was his passion. His product knowledge, his operational and communication skills and his love of the business was on display every day, however the best of his skills were saved for his people. I am not exaggerating when I say that John could teach a masters class on leadership and motivation. If you were fortunate enough to find yourself working on a team of Johns what you were assured of was honest feedback, intricate development conversations and the knowledge that no one was working harder for you….. or the company, to succeed. When you are with a company as long as John was you have lots of highs and lows. We opened lots of stores and new divisions. John had 100s of stores from multiple divisions reporting into him with thousands of team members who looked to him for guidance and direction. He was always asked to manage the region where the home office associates were in his stores weekly. That definitely took its toll on many before him but he not only welcomed it, he embraced it ! He taught his people how to utilize those opportunities to grow their business. He hired and developed the incredibly talented teams needed to succeed in that environment. And he did it for 40 years!!!!! On the other hand, when PVH decided to sell a brand or close a division it was John who would manage that moment, better than anyone could ever expect. People’s lives were being dramatically impacted and John went through every moment with them as only the best of leaders can do. When you work with someone as long as John and I did there are numerous stories and too many examples to speak of on just how he left his mark on the lives of so many PVH associates. I consider myself very lucky to have been one of them.
