The Controller’s organization within Chemicals was broken into three main regions. I was the Europe/Africa Controller. The role had 13 direct reports with an entire span of control of approximately 105 staff. Staff were located in Rotterdam-the Netherlands, Chester-UK, London-UK, Eschborn-Germany, Berre-France, Durban-South Africa, Warsaw-Poland. Primary activities of the team dealt with financial accounting and transactions into GSAP, Business Warehouse, Chemist and FIRST Group Reporting and statutory and tax reporting for numerous legal entities. The role provided the challenges of a virtual team spread over many countries and nationalities. The role oversaw the new pan-EU arrangement and governance of Shell Chemicals Europe BV which functioned as the main marketing/business arm of Shell Chemicals in Europe. The role also served with a double-hat to act as the global focal point for the Controller’s team as well as participated on the Global Chemicals Finance Leadership Team. Shell Oil’s Corporate Treasury group was the focal point for a multi-billion dollar corporate debt program. It also advises and executes many of the subsidiary debt programs. This position worked closely with and reported directly to the Treasurer. Responsibilities included coordinating debt and dividend policy for Shell Oil Company, issuing Shell’s entire tax-exempt bond financing, and providing financing strategy advice to the business segments.
