Sex Offender Treatment Counselor
-
Apr 2005 - Apr 2008
I worked with a clinical staff that included Psychologists, Social Workers, and Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs & LPCs). The then Governor, Janet Nepolitano, wanted to stop building prisons and to create sex offender treatment programs for sex offenders that would eventually be released from prison. We put together Clinical treatment programs that were primarily group treatment with limited one-on-one help available. These were 6 and 12 month programs. We were located at the Department of Corrections prison in Tucson, Arizona, (Winchester Unit). This was a prison yard with only sex offenders. 560 Child Molesters, Rapists, and various other sex offenses. We opened the programs to inmates on voluntary basis, with one on one assessments on each inmate before acceptance of them. We also put together a treatment program for low functioning inmates. The programs were well accepted and Department of Corrections was very satisfied with the treatment programs. The programs were updated as we progressed through the first year. I left after my 3rd year (Federal Grant ended). We also shared the programs with the Federal Prison System. The Probation Officers in Arizona worked with our group and said they could see the differences in released inmates that had finished our treatment program. I left after my 3rd year (Federal Grant ended). I still do some private work with these programs in Florida.
