John is an innovative architect who listens to his clients needs. I have referred John to clients and friends and the results speak for themselves. The homes he designs are real homes, they really work and function and the clients are delighted. I would recommend John and love working with him.

The essence of our company is advocacy - we help our clients get the best quality result that they can, that will suit their lifestyle, aspirations and of course budget. We've worked on a multitude of job types over the years. Regardless of project type, I have been able to indulge my passion for working with people, to improve their homes, workspaces, or where they meet to play sport or socialise. We unashamedly advocate for our clients, and are committed helping them realise their dreams and desires. We see Abri Architects as a means to helping people, to impart our experience and knowledge and work as part of a team to create places for them. We like to think differently for them. The loss of my eye has taught me that vision is much more than seeing, and approaching things from a different perspective can open up ideas and opportunities that sometimes are hidden in plain sight. The term `architect' used to mean `master builder' - we believe that as people who think `big picture' and who like to work as part of a team, we can offer a different approach to the creation of spaces and places for people, and with people. We've been told we think `outside the box' - we prefer to think that there is no box. What we do think is that architecture is not about buildings, it's about people, places, events, experiences and the feelings and emotions that good design and well conceived places can add to those things Show less

    • Volunteer Football Coach U-14 Grade

With my second son departed the school I was able to commit some time in the coaching of my fourth son's team, having looked after another son's squad as well as assisting with the 1st XI in 2012. I was given the opportunity to coach a very good group of boys from the Football institute at Sacred Heart, playing in the Secondary Schools U-14 year group competition. We concentrated on the development of the players, and on approaching the game form a viewpoint of possession and support for your team mates. Many school teams are terribly goal focussed, to an extent where they lose sight of the simple aspects of the game - possession, movement, passing and enjoyment. This is a philosophy that works on results springing from sound principles, and from taking every opportunity during a game to try and see different options - that may be simple but not obvious. Hidden in plain sight. Fortunately the boys I had to work with were bright and willing to learn, and adapted to a new way of thinking very well. They worked hard and were rewarded with some very good results at the end of the season. Football is very much about vision, and about being creative for one another. Each of the players in the squad worked tirelessly to help make their team mates do well, and the result was a team that whilst small in stature to many of the teams we came up against, worked well above their `weight grade' and played many fancied teams from large schools off the park. The mental strength and willingness to learn different ideas that this squad possess augers well for football at the school. 13A Football (U-14 Year Grade) Honours Winners AKSS 13A Championship 2013 Winners Russell Year 9 North Island Invitational Tournament 2013 Show less

    • Volunteer Manager 1st XI Football
      • Jan 2011 - Oct 2012

Following my time and experience with Eastern Suburbs FC, I assisted with the management of SHC's 1st XI team, and was lucky enough to be involved during two very successful and fruitful years. With Coach Danny Hay and assisted by Neil Penfold, the team were able to claim every trophy possible in secondary school football over that two year period. None of these trophies had been previously won, by a school who until recently has been seen as a traditionally strong sporting school, but mainly in rugby. A young squad of 14 and 15 year olds initially trained by Danny Hay at U-14 level, grew through the ranks to form the basis of an extremely strong squad. A number of players featured in over 50 games for the 1st XI, with some playing from Year 10 through Year 13 and amassing over 100 `caps' for the school at a competitive level. • 2006 - 2010

Having coached all four of my boys through their early stages of football at Junior level, I found myself heavily involved in the running of the club Youth Section, and headed a very well supported group of keen volunteer parents. We initiated a youth development programme, with the club employing a full time Director of Youth Football, who oversaw coaching of the parent coaches, facilitation of a syllabus for that, and management of contract coaches to look after the top level teams in each year grade from U-10 years through to U-17 level. The Youth section of the club blossomed through this, and was during this time described by AFF CEO David Parker as a `model club' in terms of youth development. The club developed and then also attracted some very good quality players, and saw success on many levels through the age groups, with many players going on to regional and national representative level on both men's and women's football.
