I had the pleasure to hire and work with John at borders. John is a merchant plain and simple. He works hard and knows how to drive sales. He has great leadership qualities and motivates his team to accomplish the task at hand. If given the chance I would choose to have him on my team again.

I have been a Sales Manager with Borders for more than 3 years, first at the innovative Concept Store at Waters Place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, then at the Southland Mall store in Taylor, Michigan. Paritcipating in the inception of the Concept Store was one of the highlights of my career. From the beginning I feel like what I brought to the table at the Concept Store wasn't what I was brought there for - my merchandising and selling ability - but the quick realization that what was needed was to bring a Book Store alive with dynamic people who were Alpha personalities that also knew the Book, Music, Digital, and Cafe businesses. I was fortunate to work for, and with, people who shared that vision and allowed me to spread my wings. It was a wildly successful venture right out of the gate, and is still a successful store for the company. That store was the Camelot of the Book retail business. But that is definitely a scenario that can be created again.

My time with DSW was very interesting and allowed me to see so many different aspects of retail and management. It was there that I really got the knack of adjusting my assortment of merchandise to maximize sales and profit. At first DSW was a very operationally focused enterprise with a huge Loss Prevention influence. In my time there it became more heavily focused on a Sales Culture and growth through its very successful customer loyalty program.
