John is a standout public speaker. John came to our conference as a guest speaker and kept everyone engaged throughout the session, drawing from personal anecdotes and professional experiences. He is confident, genuine person who is very likable and easy to listen to. We have also worked together on a variety of great projects with more to come in the future. It is without hesitation that I highly recommend John for his inspirational talks and I look forward to continue working with him.

Julie Firth

A great motivator with people skills which any employer would highly recomend. Forward thinking and dynamic actions make John an asset to any team. Creative, passionate and determined, driven, respected and approachable, John sets his targets SMARTly and reaches them.

      • Oct 2015 - Present

Initially employed at the early stages of the programme, I was responsible for creating the full scheme of work, including lesson plan aided by my Assistant Team Leader. Full autonomy on delivering a successful programme. The role also included recruiting a team of young people. Repeatedly achieving both the college and Prince’s Trusts KPI’s. Creating a programme that consistently achieves high recognition from high standards across all centres we have proudly won three regional awards for the community work and four for young people who joined us. This programme is now running in partnership with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, South Yorkshire Police, Barnsley College and The Prince’s Trust and we have expanded over three different locations, a target I set when first employed and I have been instrumental in pushing forward. Working hard to develop friends to the programme at all levels of the community meant that recognition of this work was recognised by HRH The Prince of Wales who visited my team on a trip to Yorkshire. In 2021 (Post Covid) I created the FIRED UP initiative a three day resilience programme. I created the scheme of works and then worked in partnership to ensure a solid delivery for young people who have been through the toughest year to date. Working on the six domains of resilience. The programme was three days undertaking one fire ground drill which steadily became tougher and tougher until the last day where the team needed to react to a pressurised experience. At which point we fell back on our pillars discussing when they were used throughout. A well received first run was offered to Sheffield College and the team were hugely impressed with how the programme ran. Show less

Training instructor to young people between the ages of 13 - 18. Implementing training and development of young people in the community. Offering a full training package that includes outdoor education, team work, and motivation. This is done using tried and tested methods from one of Sheffield’s oldest youth organisations. Constant personal development to ensure that I offer the most up to date and relevant information to the people in my charge. And in 2017 our detachment was picked to represent our area at the annual Gibraltar Cup Competition to find the best detachment in the UK. Second place for Royal Marines Cadet Guard National Drill and Piping 2022. Working with outside assistance we have taken our cadets to work with RMR London in Portsmouth and the RMA in Spean Bridge, being the first Royal Marine Cadet Detachment to take part in the Spean Bridge Memorial. Fundraising, I have been instrumental in creating fundraising ideas that are innovative and fun to help the unit raise money to develop the cadet experience more and I have been the driving force behind our Big Yomp in 2017 and Big Drop in 2018. Raising funds and awareness of our unit. In the last five years my fundraisers have earned the unit over £20k. During the Covid pandemic in 2020 -2021 I was instrumental in creating online learning, this was initially used primarily by my detachment, this was then sent out at troop level ensuring we got cadets promoted in year. This was then run at Company level for adult training. I also ran online parades that were broadcast worldwide. My work was recognised by the Area Officer who sent a commendation for all my work during this very difficult time. The detachment came out of lockdown with more cadets and staff than we went into with. Show less

Being self-employed has seen me grow my skills to take in not only the sales aspect, also marketing, web-design, project management, design and build skills. The business was initially very successful and had a worth of some 250k during its first two years of trading - however like most small businesses the recession has had a negative impact on trade and I felt that a clean break would be advantageous.
