Working in Prof Harrison Steel's group on microbial communities for bioproduction using the Chi.bio platform. In this role I am working closely with Chi.bio bioreactors, developing novel interactions between bacteria and computational systems to control complex microbial cocultures. This involves cutting edge synthetic biology approaches and use of Python to produce new software programs to interact with bacteria. Working in Prof Gary Black's group in the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environmental on the Building Metabolism strand. Research involved isolation and characterisation of novel microbial chasses for metabolic engineering, and novel enzymatic machineries. Developed extensively with AKTA instruments, performing protein purifications and size-exclusion chromatography. In addition developed in bioinformatics performing genome assembly and annotation, and general use of R. Lab moved to new university! PhD research on synthetic gene circuits and magnetic biomineralisation. Cloned and produced genes in E. coli which instigated production of magnetic materials, while designing characterising and debugging temperature sensitive synthetic gene circuits. Developed adeptness with basic biochemistry (SDS-PAGE, Western blots, protein purification...), as well as gene circuit design. Supervised numerous undergraduates in the laboratory and 4 iGEM Teams. Along with two other PhD students, I supervised the Dundee Schools iGEM Team and the Dundee iGEM Team for the 2016 iGEM competition. This involved day to day training and supervision in basic molecular biology techniques along with project planning and coaching the teams to earn gold medals and win three prize nominations. Beyond this, I personally supervised a member of the high school team in their Science Baccalaureate laboratory project. Here I planned a regime of experiments and taught the skills that were needed to characterise the genetic parts the team had made a little further and with more depth. Show less
