Emergency Department Scribe

The ER medical scribes at Kootenai Health are in charge of documenting the interactions between the patient and physician. In addition, they record the medications administered, the care performed for the patient, and the various interpretations of labs done under the direction of a provider. In the emergency department, the scribe is exposed to a variety of patients ranging from severe traumas to the acute and chronically ill.

Urgent Care Medical Scribe

The central role of the Medical Scribe is to relieve the physician of clerical or secretarial duties; thus allowing the physician to focus more directly on clinical care. A scribe is an unlicensed person and exclusively non-clinical. They do not touch patients and do not engage in any type of patient care. A scribe’s role is limited to documentation and efficiency management for the physician. The scribe observes the physician during patient encounters and performs documentation on the physician’s behalf. Under the direction of the physician, they enter information into the patient’s electronic or written chart. All documentation is reviewed and edited by the physician. It is signed with an attestation by the provider that the scribed chart accurately reflects all work, treatment, procedures, and medical decision making performed by them. Scribes function as the physician’s personal secretary and requires access to electronic databases that is similar to the access granted to the physicians themselves. Within the framework of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, the scribe needs the functionality to find old records and results. At the physician’s request, the scribe must be able to locate past medical records, prior lab/radiology results, or past visit histories for the physician to review. Additionally, within the EMR itself, the scribe needs the ability to enter data into the chart on the physician’s behalf. All scribe-entered data is reviewed and authenticated by the physician. Organic Chemistry I and II Lab TA

Over the course of two semesters, I had the opportunity to help instruct students with various lab procedures and assisted in grading student pre-laboratory assignments. This role gave me the responsibility to manage students while they used chemistry equipment like mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy.

Climbing Wall Instructor

My role as a climbing wall instructor largely included customer interaction where I taught individuals how to safely and efficiently climb within Whitworth University's Recreation Center. Additionally, I educated people how to properly use climbing equipment like harnesses and belay devices for roped climbing while also focusing on non-roped bouldering climbing, as well. Every year, I assist in teaching new staff members proper climbing techniques and skills that include customer interaction, new climbers safely presentation, risk management, and situational rope rescue climbing. Furthermore, I am a senior member of the Whitworth setting team at the rock wall. I engage with the community to create mentally and physically challenging climbing routes on the wall in bouldering and top-rope climbing. Show less

Laboratory Research Scientist

My role in working at Putzke Laboratory is as a laboratory scientist where my research focuses on bacterial interactions with toxic metals, in specific, examining a dissimilatory arsenic reducing bacteria called Shewanella sp. strain ANA-3 and how it reacts with arsenic within the Spokane River. Currently, this research project is focused on the quantitative analysis of Shewanella and I am looking to create a standard curve that will be used to detect the presence of Shewanella within the Spokane River. Within this project, I utilize several molecular biology techniques used to analyze bacteria, such as total RNA isolation, reverse transcription of RNA to cDNA and qPCR, which gives a quantitative result for bacterial gene activity. While working at Beverly's Restaurant, I was placed in charge of various sections of the restaurant where I worked closely with my servers to give the best possible service to our customers. My roles included engaging with customers throughout their entire visit to the restaurant, delivering gourmet food to tables and clearing the table after each meal was completed. My position depended on excellent communication skills where I developed an ability to speak to a wide variety of customers from all walks of life. As head busser, I was tasked with maintaining the control in the restaurant and I restructured the roles of a busser within Dockside.
