I’ve worked with Johan in various types of meetings from hosting high-profile academic guests to down-to-earth organizational problem-solving. I’ve been impressed by his intellect and foresight at every turn.

I know Prof. Johan Edelheim since 2013 as a visiting Professor at Taylor's University, where he supported the research development at the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts. Especially his expertise in the field of global and cultural tourism helped me to develop my research. Furthermore, he took the time to inspire my Master student to enhance their dissertation.

After two years as a visiting professor, and three years as a specially appointed at Hokkaido University I am now a tenured professor at the Research Faculty of Media and Communication, and the Graduate School of International Media, Communication, and Tourism Studies. Tourism studies at Hokkaido University differ from many other places by being distinctly a field of social sciences where 'tourism creation' is seen in combination with the media saturated society we live in. The school is home to scholars focused on community engagement, discourse, popular culture, to name just a few, and offers students an array of courses in Japanese and English. Show less

I was the Head of Department at the Norwegian School of Hotel Management (NHS) at the University of Stavanger (UiS) in south-west Norway from spring 2017 until autumn 2018. NHS is the world's second oldest Hotel management college (founded in 1912), and consists of a team of approximately 30 Hospitality and Tourism experts, and some 350 students doing their Bachelor and Masters degrees in Norwegian and English. NHS alumni can be found all over Norway, Scandinavia and beyond, in leading positions connected to hospitality, tourism, and general leadership - the school's specialities. The school is located in the middle of UiS Ullandshaug campus in a purpose built facility donated by the alumni association for the school. My role at MTI was to conduct academic and applied tourism research on behalf of Lapland University Consortium (LUC)'s two university partners. I was employed 50% by each partner (University of Lapland, and Lapland University of Applied Sciences) and produced publications relevant for the organisations' strategic purposes. The most tangible outcome of this year was an edited volume on 'Key Concepts in Tourism Studies', written in Finnish by 42 researchers from all over Finland, see link below. Show less

I worked as director of MTI, a position that incorporated being Dean of Tourism Studies at University of Lapland; Department Head for Hospitality and Tourism studies at Lapland University of Applied Sciences; and, Principal for Lapland Tourism College. The Multidimensional Tourism Institute (MTI) is an innovative institute combining Vocational (VET) education at Lapland Tourism College; Polytechnic education and applied research at Lapland University of Applied Sciences; and Higher Education + academic research (HE) at the University of Lapland - all concentrated on tourism and hospitality (T&H). MTI is one of northern Europe's largest institutes concentrated on T&H, and one of few institutes in the world that allow students to choose educational paths in three educational dimensions; operational, applied science or research based - without mixing up the different paths. MTI is proud to offer diplomas for operational tasks in T&H and sees career paths in the industries as goals in themselves, where e.g. chefs can build on their skills with further vocational courses - rather than simply seing VET education as a step on the way to HE. MTI is also proud to offer a range of degrees (Bachelor and Masters) focussed on T&H from either a commercial applied science perspective or from a research based social science perspective. MTI offers full separate courses in Finnish or English at both Bachelor and Masters levels Show less

I acted as Visiting Professor at Taylor's University 2012-2016, conducting on campus graduate seminars, meeting research candidates, and staff. I continue my cooperation with Taylor's, but no longer in an official Visiting Professor role. My first visiting period was November-December 2012, which coincided with the 4th AsiaEuro 2012 Gastronomy conference, Taylor's University's Graduate Research Colloquium (where I did a keynote speech) and the inaugural Travel and Tourism Research TTRA Asia-Pacific chapter conference (where I acted as session chair). I acted as supervisor for a PhD candidate at Taylor's, conducted one-on-one research coaching sessions with research students when on campus, and have been an external evaluator for two staff promotion applications.
