Natalka Shackley
Joe worked for the Faculty of Engineering as a student ambassador at numerous events, whilst studying for his demanding degree course. He was an exceptional ambassador at several residential summer schools and demonstrated excellent organisational skills, enthusiasm and a passion for inspiring students. He was excellent at relationship building with everyone, including management, parents, peers and students. He was responsible for looking after a group of 10 students during the residential schools and managed to remain professional throughout whilst instilling a great sense of fun and team spirit amongst his group. He was an excellent team player as well as a leader and helped the other ambassadors to work together efficiently. I was hugely impressed with Joe’s professionalism, enthusiasm and positive attitude and can highly recommend him, I strongly believe he will be a very valuable asset to any organisation.

Jun 2022 - Present
Director of Manchester Makers Ltd (T/A Manchester Hackspace) in the post-pandemic recover of the community organisation. Hackspace is a not-for-profit space empowering the people of Manchester to design, make and mend by providing them with a well equipped space to do so. Since taking on the role I have worked to formalise and update the processes the space has been informally using for its past 10 years. This has involved managing and working with several teams of volunteers to ensure a each project has a scope and unified deliverables set out before implementation. Some achievements have been: Increasing the membership 75% in 8 months- we now have 250 members. Increasing member engagement with the space - There are now monthly events taking place. Refreshed the space's out of date health and safety policies including ensuring risk assessments are in place for all tools and suitable controls are being managed where needed. Conducted an analysis of the spaces cashflow and spending to allow a yearly budget to be set to ensure the longevity of the community. Show less

Oct 2018 - Aug 2021
During my time at Momentum I worked on a wide range of projects. I took a particular interest in timber buildings, both new build and historic repair. Some highlights include: - Jacksons Lane Arts Centre, Haringey, London £3M extensive upgrade of a grade II listed masonry methodist church structure. The building has been used as a space for performing arts for several decades. I was brought on at RIBA stage 4/5. Works included design of a glulam glass roof, installation of a steel mezzanine and lift shaft, levelling works throughout the building and installation of trusses for use by circus performers. - Scout Farm Barn, Redbourn Rebuild of a burnt out and rotten grade II listed 18th century green oak barn. The barn was being converted into a living space. I was the principle engineer from RIBA 2 to 5. Works included assessment and design of green oak repairs, working closely with the timber framers. Design of concrete foundations and retaining walls around the site, taking into account large numbers of trees nearby. Working with easi-joist suppliers to tackle the unique challenges the project involved. - Mandeville Street Housing, Hackney (~£3m) 11 new build residential dwellings for Hackney Council including social housing. I was brought on at RIBA stage 4 for a design and build contract. The project involved extensive masonry design and detailing with a mix of precast plank and timber floors. - Dubai Expo 2020 Verification of a steel stage design. Works included producing a wind speed management plan for the stage, and providing ballast requirements for the rigging team. Show less
