Experience

    • Postdoctoral Fellow
      • May 2022 - Present

The 2-year postdoctoral project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and includes an extended stay at the Human Geography Department at Lund University, Sweden. I research the scalar causal relationships shaping forest transitions in Vietnam and Laos using geospatial, quantitative and qualitative methods. I employ remote sensing of forest cover change coupled and secondary socioeconomic datasets on the one hand, and grounded fieldwork in a borderland region in northern Vietnam and Laos. Policy-relevant outputs will focus on the spatially and socially differentiated outcomes and drivers of forest expansion, differentiating between different types of forests and trees including mono-cropped plantations and multifunctional landscapes that generate diverse socio-economic and environmental services, in the context of global environmental agendas such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and Convention on Biological Diversity. I collaborate with researchers from the Centre for Development and Environment, Bern University in Vientiane, the Institute of Geography at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies at the Vietnam National University. I am a PhD Candidate at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen, and an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) and MSCA fellow at the COUPLED-ITN EUR Project (www.coupled-itn.eu). My supervisor is Professor Ole Mertz. My research focuses on how discourses on forest conservation influence local land-use change and livelihood outcomes. In order to make sense of the complex and distal linkages between global conservation agendas and local decisions on which global conservation efforts depend, I employ mixed methods and an interdisciplinary approach to the research. Focusing on conservation efforts in Lao PDR, the objective is to understand how and to what extent these discourses become institutionalised in practice, and how local people navigate pressures and opportunities arising from interacting influences. The overarching goal is to contribute to conservation policy that can better capture the complexity of global-local system dynamics and feedback flows to become more conducive of sustainable land-use. The COUPLED-ITN EU Project (www.coupled-itn.eu) is a four-year, European Training Network granted by the European Commission under Horizon 2020, which seek to educate researchers capable of understanding processes and actors that influence land-use in an increasingly interconnected world, while considering distant, unexpected feedbacks and spillovers and to account for their social and environmental impact in order to foster new and enhanced governance measures that can shape land-use couplings to deliver more sustainable outcomes of land use decisions. Provided technical support to development of Cambodia’s Forest Reference Emissions Level (FREL), a key component of the national programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). Tasks included authoring reports on land-use change based on qualitative and quantitative data, workshop participation and follow-up, producing technical inputs to discussions on programme design, contributing to narrative on a technical document submitted to the IPCC.
