You can count on Joel Gorthy to be a hard worker, innovator and contributor. His ideas and ability to assess and solve problems and confront challenges, underscore his value to make a tremendous difference with everything he's involved with. He's a thinker and a player. He’s creative and has the certain ability to connect with those he deals with. I heartily recommend him.

Throughout my career I have worked with many editors and editorial managers and few can compare with Joel Gorthy. While working together at the Register-Guard, Joel combined his talent for understanding issues and how to communicate a good story while also upholding a difficult-to-manage publication schedule. Joel was always available for strategizing and was always prompt in his communication and unfailingly cheerful and pleasant. I found him easy to work with and professional, no matter how busy he was. I would not hesitate to recommend Joel for any management field as well as writing or editing as he is clearly a valuable team member, able to seamlessly move from one role to another with ease.

∙ Planned, organized, and executed a broad spectrum of profitable, well-read publishing projects for the state’s largest-circulation daily newspaper. This included tabular print sections such as Tastings, Discovery, and HG Monthly, and online articles, blog posts, slideshows, and videos. ∙ Used initiative and research to generate ideas, and then wrote articles on gardening, homes and real estate, wine and cuisine, outdoor recreation, the arts, and other topics. ∙ Wrote a popular weekly food/drink column, “541 Flavors,” for a year starting in July 2018. Developed complex, well-researched, and clearly articulated story lists months in advance for diverse publications — at times managing several concurrently. ∙ Coordinated the in-house team (three writer-editors, one designer, and two photographers) and a variety of freelance writers when working as lead editor on a section. ∙ Reviewed story pitches from and assigned stories to freelance writers; made suggestions to them regarding approach; and edited their work for structure, grammar, accuracy, and style. ∙ Ensured that each publication was within budget for freelance work and other expenses. ∙ Posted articles and photos to the web using a database-driven content management system.
