Joel is a pleasant person to work with and makes himself available to assist with any projects, cases, or issues within and outside of his team. Joel is a very throughout employee; Joel and I once worked together on an IT related Linux issue with his teams development server to which he dedicated himself to the issue until it was resolved. I recommended Joel with any endeavors he pursues and I would enjoy working with him again. He is an excellent resource!

    • Senior Software Engineer
      • Nov 1995 - Aug 2002

Lead programmer on team responsible for development and production of large scale corporate security software systems under Unix and Linux. The main product enabled companies to integrate many disparate systems across multiple sites and campuses under a single umbrella of control manageable by a minimum of security officers working from one or more centralized control rooms. The systems included access control, biometrics, intrusion detection, fire and other hazard detection, video badging, time and attendance, and several other optional modules. These systems consisted of hardware and embedded software from third-party manufacturers, requiring licensing of many proprietary communication protocols and the design and coding of low-level interfaces for each unique system to the main core. Tasks involved extensive GUI development using Panther environment to implement database entry and reporting screens as well as real-time system monitoring. Database access using HP-ALLBASE under HP-UX and Sybase through ODBC under Linux. Other GUI development used X-Windows in C, native Unix and Linux window management applications, and combinations of MS-Access and Visual Basic for various Windows client modules. Job covered all areas of development, including coding, testing, production and technical & end-user support, as well as documentation. Other development used embedded SQL in C for database applications, SQL scripts, and extensive Unix/Linux scripting. Main responsibilities were design, development, testing, and production of new code, writing of technical and end-user documentation, internal support serving as overall knowledge repository for other engineers, external support of clients, maintenance and upgrade of existing code, installing operating systems such as HP-UX, various flavors of Linux, and MS Windows on new computers, creating and maintaining databases using ALLBASE and Sybase, network administration, and overall troubleshooting.
