Product Manager - Physical Sciences
-
Oct 2023 - Present
Product Manager for the Physical Sciences range of cameras at Andor Technology. This role covers the High Energy Detection (HED) and the Time-Resolved Detection camera systems. High Energy Detection (HED) includes innovative detector solutions for applications such as X-ray tomography and non-invasive materials inspection. Time-Resolved (TR) products include single photon sensitive detectors that are capable of very fast shuttering, down to 2 nanoseconds, ideal for applications such as fast fluid dynamics monitoring (e.g. in combustion processes), spectroscopic characterisation of the transient excited states of molecules, studies of plasma dynamics and quantum physics entangled photon experiments. The focus of my Ph.D was researching into the various underwater applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. During my Ph.D I investigated the drag reduction effects of superhydrophobic surfaces and the plastron air layer that they create. This was run as a project at Nottingham Trent University and in conjunction with the University of Southampton and Northumbria University. I also worked on a project that looked in to underwater breathing using commercially available superhydrophbic fabrics. For the drag reduction work, superhydrophobic surfaces were created using various production techniques and tested using a circulating flow chamber at Nottingham Trent University and a tow tank with collaborators at the University of Southampton. Drag coefficients were measured with a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) at NTU and with hot wire anemometry at the University of Southampton. The tow tank samples were large area samples made using a photolithography process. The flow chamber samples were made in two main ways. 1) create rough surfaces out of sand and hydrophobising them. 2) Creating growth on copper meshes through electrodeposition and hydrophobising the mesh. As well as drag reduction results, plastron retention properties were tested using a confocal microscope and combined with images taken on a scanning electron microscope. The plastron breathing work was conducted with a variety hydrophobised fabrics. Boxes were made using the fabrics and the oxygen level in the box was monitored and compared to a sealed box. A variety of fabric properties was obtained with the aim of working out what lead to the best sample. Show less

Lab technician
-
Aug 2007 - Sep 2008
Year in Industry position working for Sun Chemical Circuits. I worked within the screen printing department within the Research and Development labs. My main responsibility was working with new screen printable conductive and dielectric inks. This included making up new formulations of inks and testing them for properties like conductivity, viscosity and thickness of print. As well as this I undertook a project working out the efficiency of a test used in quality assurance using Six Sigma and Minitab MSA. Luckily my name is quite simple to spell but sometimes people still get it wrong. I often get Jo instead of Joe. Josef instead of Joseph. Brennen instead of Bennan. Or sometimes people miss an n and put Brenan or Brenen. Show less
