When a Management position opened up at my company one particular name was recommended to me by several people; this person, Joe Mendiola was a former employee who had left the company four years previously. We hired him back as the Manager of our Biologics Upstream Manufacturing team. Well-liked, respected and even admired by his subordinates, peers, management and clients, Joe was an absolutely essential part of the success of our department during his tenure. There was no part of the job where he didn’t consistently strive to contribute. Every day he came to work with an enthusiasm to dive into the job at hand. In our fast-paced Operations environment, any number of things might go wrong, but he would always remain unfazed. Joe is blessed with a keen intelligence, humble personality, calm demeanor and charming manner that always made others feel comfortable in his presence; be they clients, coworkers or direct reports. The ignoble task of broaching difficult or uncomfortable news often fell on Joe’s shoulders. True to form, he was always able to handle it with aplomb and grace and keep us in good standing with the client. Joe consistently demonstrated outstanding personal initiative with whatever issue we might encounter. Joe would attend to these issues and resolve them without being told. The most widely accurate thing I could possibly say about Joe is that it’s impossible to imagine anyone saying anything negative about him. If you could order up a Manager of people in a technical environment to exacting specifications – just the right combination of people skills, technical skills, attitude and work ethic; Joe Mendiola is what you’d end up with. He has a sincere interest in the welfare of other people – be they clients, peers, his direct reports or his management and was particularly effective at coaching and mentoring others. Before he left our company, he led and set into motion a number of continuous improvement initiatives that are still underway months later. In addition to his regular duties, he led our efforts to validate our mid-size production fermenter – a Hurculean task because the equipment had been purchased used and sat idle for several years. This achievement alone increased our fermentation capacity by over 10% Joe is an all-around decent human being, and it's readily apparent by his actions that he has a sincere interest in making being in the workplace a better experience for everyone else. I worked with Joe for only slightly more than a year, but even in that short time he left an indelible impression and
