I underwent an industrial placement year while at university in a research position working in Sheffield Hallam Universities Materials and Engineering Research Institution (MERI). I was working on an existing research project they were completing on behalf of St Leger Homes of Doncaster (SLHD), the local housing authority in Doncaster. Doncaster had recently invested over three million pounds in retrospectively improving the thermal performance of their whole housing stock, the research project was set up to provide tangible results of the energy and cost savings as a result of these improvements from the point of view of all parties involved. I worked in the offices of SLHD the majority of the time. The position required me to: go out into Doncaster and meet with residents to discuss the work carried out on their homes, analyse vast amounts of data and carry out comprehensive background research about various subjects. One of the many reports I completed during my time at SLHD was based on analysing the success of a 9,000 kW centralized heating system, which I got the opportunity to present at an operational research conference which took place at Exeter University.

    • Project Manager (Building Services Contracts)
      • Oct 2006 - Aug 2010

I worked full time of the above engineering company in their mechanical building services contracts department, whilst attending college on day release where I achieved my HNC and NC in Building Services Engineering. The company manage various HVAC installation contracts at any one time, ranging in size from whole system installation in new build commercial properties, to domestic size system bathroom refurbishment. I was involved in various stages of numerous mechanical building services projects, from estimating and designing potential projects all the way through to final handover. My job role as a junior engineer was to complete tasks that would allow the senior engineers to complete their projects fluently. I spent a lot of my time: tendering for new contracts or providing prices for extras on existing jobs, overseeing pipe work fabrication projects that were being carried out in house on behalf of site based engineers, completing operation and maintenance files when required and adapting the contract drawings to ‘as installed’ drawing used AutoCAD to demonstrate any changes to the layout of the building services. Project management requires a high degree of organisation, time management and attention to detail to ensure profits are maximised, all traits which I developed during my time at J Fletcher Engineering. I gained experience working as part of a team and communicating with a variety of people. I am very familiar with engineering drawings/notation.
