Financial Assessor
-
Nov 2009 - May 2011
My role involved two separate roles during my time working at the DWP. My initial role was to assess the ongoing eligibility of claimants of Jobseekers Allowance. This involved rolling face-to-face interviews with claimants, questioning them about job seeking activity, requesting and then examining material evidence and then putting together a (rolling) assessment and verdict as to their continued eligibility. Subject to this assessment I was then responsible for authorising the release of funds. My role later moved to a more initial (but more senior) phase of this process. I was responsible for handling initial applications for various forms of benefits. This again involved face-to-face interviews that followed written applications. This was a more varied and in many ways challenging role as it involved more forms of benefits so a much wider range of understanding was required. Also, whilst my previous role was with people already eligible and claiming, this role involved declining a number of applications. The challenges with this role was analysing what were at times exceptionally complicated claims involving people who were at times in states of desperation and some distress. There were language barriers (translation services were extensively used) and also occasional risk when dealing with aggressive or volatile customers.I feel I developed and honed exceptional customer service skills in these roles, as was required.
