Upon request, and using the CDA evaluation tool, conduct validation visits to candidate's classroom. Validate that candidate's documentation of education, experience, and written reflection statements are in accordance with CDA requirements. Visit the candidate's classroom and observe the candidate's interactions with children and staff; evaluate health, safety, and nutrition practices, curriculum implementation, and candidate's understanding of principles of child development and learning. After the observation, meet with the candidate and discuss competency standards that may not have observed and the six reflective essays. Lastly, encourage the candidate to reflect on one area of strength and one area that they will to commit to improve. Enter my documentation to CDA website within 48 hours of observation date. Since 2006, upon request, I conduct accreditation validation visits of family child care providers in the process of pursuing national accreditation status. The process includes observing for evidence of the provider meeting the accreditation standards, providing evidence when these standards are partially or not met, and interviewing the candidate after the observation session. In July of 2017, I was selected from a national pool of candidates to join the NAFCC Accreditation Advisory Council. In this capacity I worked with the other Council members to ensure accreditation standards were research based and reflected best practice within the field of early childhood education. I co-authored the NAFCC’s first ‘position paper’, on the importance of low caregiver-child ratios, served as coordinator of the Council workshop presentation on the importance of low child:adult ratios for the 2018 NAFCC annual conference, in Chicago. I taught a special topic (1 unit) course on trauma & resilience in early education. This experience validated what I was learning in my M.Ed. On the same issue—that there is a significant gap in early childhood teacher education programs, and educators desperately want a full semester course on this topic (a course that I will be writing during the fall 2019 semester). I have facilitated student learning through several sections of: CHLD 105: Curriculum & Programs in Early Childhood Education (in the online-Blackboard format, as well as on campus; full semester (16-weeks) and compressed semester (8-weeks, online). CHLD-205: Health, Safety, & Nutrition (summer 2014, on campus (co-teacher). CHLD 245: Adult Supervision & Mentoring--this course is a natural fit with my coaching work with the Orange County Department of Education. Using the "flipped" classroom style, students took on a significant role in their learning. This was one of the most powerful courses I have had the honor to facilitate; students' feedback included descriptions of "life changing" testimonials, a deeper commitment to their career choice, and accounts of deep personal growth (fall 2016, spring 2017) Show less

I began working at SMES as a long-term substitute. In the following two years, I completed coursework for two practicum labs (one for my A.S. and another for my B.S. degrees). I accepted a position as the Assistant Teacher in a 4-year old classroom, and subsequently was offered the opportunity to facilitate afternoon outdoor activities for full-day children prior to the end of the regular school day. With no opportunity for advancement to full-time Lead Teacher, I moved on to pursue this option. I began working at SMES as a long-term substitute.
