Based on research and knowledge of the early childhood education needs in Miami-Dade, I identified the Serve Minnesota-based Reading Corps program. Over the course of two years I created the necessary partnerships, including Miami-Dade County Schools, Head Start and the Children’s Trust and procured full funding and support pledges to launch a 20-site pilot program. The Reading Corps is now fully operative and independently managed. In 1997 I assumed executive leadership of the Inner City Games (now the After School All Stars) in South Florida. The California-based non-profit organization, founded by then California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was a two-week summer sports competition in Miami. In conjunction with community leadership I led its growth to an annual budget of $6 million, serving 5,000+ students at 25 worksites. I was responsible for budgeting, communications, community engagement, fundraising and grant writing and for creating all programs and a sustainable model. In addition, I managed all of the organization’s events, inclusive of fundraising and programming, generating positive outcomes and more than $27 million in cash and in-kind support. The program, now housed at Florida International University, recently celebrated 20 years of continuous operation and is led by a team that I hired and trained.

During that time, we also worked with the Miami Herald to create the first-ever broadcast/print media partnership in the market.
