I was the lead technologist at the National Center for Blood Group Genomics (NCBGG). This new lab(2016) provides DNA-based array testing for extended blood typing for donors and patients. DNA testing provides information for antigens not possible by serology, having the ability to find uncommon antigen combinations. This lab overall provides testing for a wide range of genetic variants that affect red blood cell antigen expression, improving the factors that go into blood transfusions. My day to day laboratory work included manual and automated DNA extractions from whole blood, buccal swabs and amniocytes, PCR set-up, HEA testing, RHD typing using PCR methods, gel electrophoresis, reporting results to physicians, resolving discrepancies and organizing the workflow of the lab.
