Promoting past and contemporary British and Portuguese music, developing and culturally enriching a wide range of new audiences, Northern Lusofonia embraces an inclusive approach to music and other forms of art and encourages cultural exchanges among the youth, the community and professional musicians through outreach projects and cultural activities. Northern Lusofonia nurtures artistic and cultural ties in celebration of the world’s oldest alliance – that of Great Britain and Portugal – by premiering newly written and less-known music works. Northern Lusofonia was a Manchester-based non-profit company dedicated to the promotion of British and Portuguese music as well as to the championing and commissioning of new music. Our musicians came from the finest music backgrounds, from celebrated international musicians to young music professionals trained or graduated at some of the UK's best conservatoires. They all shared a special affection for British and Portuguese music and were passionate about sharing it with our audiences. Northern Lusofonia’s events shared the passion and vibrancy of some of the best music written by composers from English and Portuguese speaking countries. Our concerts were naturally welcoming as they fostered cultural exchanges among a wider public through the finest music making and a creative programme. Northern Lusofonia followed an ethos of inclusiveness by providing diversity in concert programming and high-level music making in an informal concert atmosphere at affordable prices. All concerts included small exhibitions of arts and crafts, literature or traditional cuisine and wines. Show less

Now in its fifth decade, the RNCM is relatively young, but its rich history spans back to 1893 when Sir Charles Hallé founded the Royal Manchester College of Music. In 1973, this institution merged with the Northern School of Music, and the RNCM was born.Today, the College is a thriving conservatoire with around 320 teaching staff and 880 students from nearly 60 different countries.Complementing this role, the RNCM is also a vibrant live music venue offering unparalleled opportunities for students to perform regularly to public audiences and to work alongside professional musicians and visiting artists. Housing four major performance spaces, including a professionally-staffed, fully-equipped Theatre and recently refurbished Concert Hall, the College presents more than 400 concerts each year, ranging from RNCM orchestras and ensembles and large-scale opera productions, to a host of touring companies and external hires. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated the RNCM the UK’s leading music college for research and in 2017 the College was ranked Gold in the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s first Teaching Excellence Framework. The RNCM has also been awarded two Times Higher Education Awards: Excellence and Innovation in the Arts (2015) and Outstanding International Student Strategy (2016). Show less
