  In this executive strategic role my tasks ranged from undertaking a critical analysis of a new Government policy or research and examining it through a rural health lens and providing direct advice to Governments, National Rural Health Alliance members and rural health stakeholders; designing evidence informed fact sheets and information resources for health professionals and rural communities; consulting with rural and remote communities and key stakeholders on health related issues and concerns;designing and implementing rural health research and developing research partnerships;writing grants, submissions and media products; and developing the organisation's strategic directions, this includes election strategies and strategic directions. Key projects included digital health, climate change; health inequalities and determinants of rural health; cultural safety; regional development; stillbirth prevention; injury prevention; and workforce skills, gaps and service designs.

  My research looked at actions rural communities on the south east coast of NSW were taking to develop sustainable and healthy communities. I used a mixed method case study design to look at 3 neighbouring local government areas. I found that taking actions for sustainability were seen as desirable, but a choice. Taking action for sustainability also raised diverse world views. In contrast, actions for health were not seen as a choice and less controversial. Actions for health were seen as non-negotiable and something that everyone in the community must do. Yet, actions for sustainability shared the same determinants as actions for health, and building social sustainability was the first step in developing actions for both health and sustainability in these rural places.
