Bio
Beverley McCormick
I've had the pleasure of working with Joanne for a number of years now and on each occasion, it was always a delight. Her love of learning, ability to present a variety of technical and often difficult concepts in meaningful ways always astounded me. Her enthusiasm always captivated my students and it was because of her encouragement that they participated in a number of STEM competitions and events.

I met Joanne in 2012 when I first joined NWRC. At the time I was slightly unsure of what career path I wanted to go down. As my teacher and course coordinator, Joanne would regularly meet with me and all other students in the class individually to monitor our academic and personal development and to ensure we were on track to reach our goals. I joined Career ready which Joanne was the coordinator of. I remember Joanne regularly gave up her spare time after college hours to arrange frequent workshops and opportunities for us throughout this programme. Joanne was a great teacher who not only shared her own career experiences with us but also organised multiple trips to London and around NI which enabled us to get first hand experience of working within industry. She reached out to IT companies in Derry and made sure we received a fully paid summer internship. This inspired me to pursue my career in the IT industry. Joanne was always focused on the development of young people within the college and the Career Ready program and she was particularly good at encouraging the small number of females on the course to attend workshops in such a male dominated course. Joanne always provided me with motivation and positive words which built my confidence and gave me many opportunities to speak and engage with professionals. Joanne always encouraged us to continue reaching out to her after college and she maintains her relationships with students post-graduation. This allowed me to seek advice and support from her even when I was at university. She was not only a great lecturer but a good friend and, with her guidance, she has helped me to secure a job with a large Fintech company in London.
