Family Law Office is a Legal Aid office where all our clients would be referred to our office through Legal Aid. We did 100% family law. Here I worked for 2 lawyers which included the following duties:• The first couple years here, I worked with the lawyer who did the appeal work. This gave me an opportunity to deal with then limitation periods and specialized Court documents.• Approximately 60% of the files I worked on was in Child Welfare. Child Welfare is not an area of law that is taught in school, therefore this was on the job learning. I picked up the idiosyncrasies of this area quite fast;• One of the lawyers I worked with preferred to work the child welfare files and left the divorce and other family law matters for me to deal with under his supervision. • Another responsibility I accepted was to work on our data & precedent systems. I picked up on these proprietary programs within a month where it would take others 3 months. The managing partner at our office requested that I manage this project from our Calgary office. My duties included: ● traveling to our IT department in Edmonton to troubleshoot and brainstorm ideas for improved efficiencies ● drafting the template precedent system to be linked to the data system ● Key player to get the 2 systems to communicate effectively ● Created a custom letterhead ● Trained & mentored the office on the use of the programs.
