It will examine the strategic and welfare effects of mass customization; behaviour-based quality differentiation; targeted products, ads and prices. It will also look at technological interoperability barriers limiting the implementation of the mass customization paradigm. In addition, the project will investigate business model innovation within the platform economy, comparing alternative market designs for digital platforms (marketplace versus reselling) and investigating how digital platforms can use Big Data to successfully implement discriminatory pricing schemes. The theoretical findings will then be used to perform an empirical study on the value chain dynamics emerging in the Portuguese fashion industry. Finally, the project will promote the creation of an independent observatory for Industry 4.0 to bring together different stakeholders interested in the digital challenges/ opportunities in new industrial ecosystems. The project's overall budget is approximately 230k (funded by Norte2020 and FCT) and the project brings together three leading research institutions in the North of Portugal: Universidade do Porto, Universidade do Minho and INESC-TEC. The principal researcher (PI) of the project is Joana Resende (Universidade do Porto) and the co-PI is Rosa Branca Esteves (Universidade do Minho).
