Bio
Stefano Mazzoleni
I had the opportunity to work with Jo Van Vaerenbergh within the framework of the IST-eHealth research project "ALLADIN ("Natural Language based decision support in neuro-rehabilitation", project N. 507424) funded by the European Commission within the Framework Programme 7 during the period 2004-2007 where he served as coordinator. I have appreciated his deep knowledge of the rehabilitation issues and his vision of technology for increasing the knowledge of human neurophysiology and human motor learning/recovery. His attitude towards scientific research and his full committment and dedication were really notable. In addition his open character and empathy have contributed to facilitate the teamwork and the problem solving.

I had the pleasure to work with Dr. Van Vaerenbergh in several projects. From the start I realized that his was a polyhedral personality combining traits of the thinker, the designer, the manager, the scientist, the doer. It is rare to find such a combination in one person! A renowned expert in neurological research, he makes of interdisciplinarity his art. Organized and pleasant to work with, without failure he can turn an idea into a project and a product. It is a pleasure to me to highlight Dr. Van Vaerenbergh’s many abilities and recommend him here!

It was time for a new challenge. Neuroscience and neurocomputing have been showing a fast evolution but have not been sufficiently embedded in neurorehabilitation till now. I hope for a game-changing approach to create a new set point for neurorehabilitation. It was time for a new challenge. Spindle looks at movement restoration in a completely different, disruptive way. Spindle identifies and defines unexpected, emergent simple behaviors arising out of complex systems, such as human motion. This emerged simplicity makes ‘living room therapy’ possible and better than whatever existing neurorehabilitation robot. This approach solves the dilemma between standardization and personalization. CMAT and CMAT-BRAIN-UNIT merged in CMAT. A complete new wesite was built and it will be updated regularly with new items. CMAT in its actual position wants to focus on the brain and how this brain represents the 'human being', the way he/she acts in an ever changing environment. When a limb is paralyzed, no doubt about saying that this is the brain, but when I'm different, depressed, violent, hyperactive or whatever.... is it me or...my brain..... The ALLADIN project focuses on the development of a user-friendly natural language based decision support software for neuro-rehabilitation, in particular in stroke. ALLADIN, if implemented provides an adequate and fast solution for a client centred practice, for discharge planning and for utilization of rehabilitation resources. This fulfils the social and political expectation of a substantial but honest cost cutting by measuring therapeutic efficiency in terms of mean quality-adjusted duration.
