As a classroom teacher for the past 15 years, I have used data to inform my teaching practices and teach my students about their own weaknesses in certain areas. Using data visualization tools, functions, and formulas in spreadsheets, I was able to tell colleagues the story of how certain behaviors happen in certain places at certain times. For instance, I was able to take all the discipline data stored in a cloud-based database for the past 3 years and show how many of the discipline issues we were facing were happening between classes near the restrooms. This enabled us to place teachers and paraprofessionals at the bathrooms during transition times. This drastically cut down on the number of discipline problems were having. Show less

Working in the most customer-facing jobs at GEICO, I was able to learn the insurance industry and its use of data to drive insurance rates, pay scales, profit-sharing, and pay outs for vehicle damages and bodily injury claims. As a member of the Professional Development Program, I was given insight into how actuaries use data to account for rate increases and decreases and how that same data could be used to justify virtually no coverage in certain zip codes based on accident pay out rates. On a daily basis, I was in charge of putting a news show together. This includes analyzing time available for the number and type of stories reporters were working, collaborating with news anchors, directors, audio specialists, reporters in the field, and graphic artists. Many stories required data visualizations using data obtained from publicly available sources. These visualizations were used to help tell a particular story and enhanced viewer knowledge of the story. This job also required working with content experts to help guide the direction of stories and to check for accuracy. Show less
