I worked with Jim for many years and any time there was a new aircraft or modified aircraft for the company to test and certify - Jim was the go to expert for Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety. He worked with virtually every discipline within the company to ensure the end product was safe and efficient to operate. Based on my history with Jim - I would highly recommend him to any company needing his expertise!!

Thiago Pereira, P.Eng

I was particularly impressed by Jim’s personality. He is very positive and enthusiastic and a good sense of humour; it was a pleasure working with him on the same team. He has exceptional expertise in Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety Engineering. He consistently demonstrated substantial work experience in Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Functional Hazard Analysis.

As part of a NASA Nexus Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), Near Earth Autonomy, takes safe autonomous flight to the world with revolutionary engineering innovation to have a positive effect on the next generation of air mobility. Near Earth Autonomy creates a future where autonomous flight is commonplace and safe. Where autonomous product development activity creates a range of unmanned aircraft (sub-meter to full scale) to operate across multiple aircraft applications. The assignment is to review the various Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) issues associated with automated flight for many types of aircraft. As a member of the System Engineering staff, who contributes to the development and deployment of aviation autonomy systems with a focus on safety assurance. This role applies safety assurance practices to the autonomous systems development cycle for various advanced prototype and production designs. Near Earth Autonomy technology allows aircraft to autonomously take off, fly, and land safely, with or without GPS. And Near Earth Autonomy solutions enable aerial mobility and inspection applications for partners in the commercial and defense sectors. Near Earth Autonomy bridges the gap between aerospace and robotics with complete systems to improve efficiency, performance, and safety for aircraft ranging from small drones to full-size aircraft helicopters. This work won the Howard Hughes Award, which recognizes outstanding improvement of fundamental helicopter technology, and was a finalist for the Collier Trophy, one of the top aviation awards in the world. My client, CN a Canadian Class I railway headquartered in Montreal, Quebec that serves Canada along with the Midwestern and Southern United States of America. The CN slogan is "North America's Railroad". Our Safety Assurance engineering group is in the process of making CN "the Safest Railroad in North America". As an engineering professional, my role is to evaluate the Railroad Safety Program Plan (RSPP). The RSPP is the strategic safety planning documentation for the development of safety-critical processor-based signal, safety-critical systems, and train control systems. Review Rail Positive Train Control (PTC) system of systems, fault-tolerant capability through both quantitative and qualitative: • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis • Fault Tree Analysis • Functional Hazard Analysis • Maintenance Concept • Reliability Modeling • Safety Case • System Engineering - Environmental Design Requirement Specification. Create PTC model tools for further RAMS analyses. Establish PTC RAMS metrics, network design, and associated interface equipment. The main concept of PTC is that the train receives information about its location, relative to where the train is allowed to safely travel. The PTC equipment on board the train then enforces the PTC algorithm to prevent unsafe movement. The PTC systems work in either dark territory or signaled territory, and uses GPS navigation to track train movement. The US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) objective is: "To deploy the Nationwide Differential Global Positioning System (NDGPS) as a nationwide, uniform, and continuous positioning system for suitable for train control."This PTC is the largest Internet of Things (IoT) project in the world. Certified by e-Railsafe, a joint Canada - US railway safety initiative. FYI - My grandfather worked as a foreman for ~40+ years on the Shawmut Northern Railroad in Northern Pennsylvania. Show less

Bombardier (Canadair) SummaryMy entire premise at BA was to make incremental positive change each and every day.Started in March 1996 as TDM (Toronto) consultant to Canadair. I was hired as a direct employee in September 1996. Worked as core Reliability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) Engineer. As a RAMS Engineer, I was part of many product certification teams. All aspects of RAMS are defined, herein. Then I went to Bombardier Aerospace Engineering System (BES) which has morphed into The Bombardier Product Development System (PDS) all while supporting RAMS Engineering. During my time at BA, I have supported most of the entire BA Product Line including variants of these aircraft models such as Amphibious, BJ-X, Challenger, CSeries, Dash-8, Global Express, Learjet, Regional Jet, and New Product Development (NPD) not yet commonly known by the public. In addition to the aircraft programs, as a Core Product Development Engineer, I had the opportunity to work with and support over 70 BA organizations as diverse as Advanced Design. Aerodynamics, Avionics, Airworthiness, Design for the Environment, Electrical, Export Control, Flight Controls, Flight Science, Flight Test, Ground Test, Human Factors, Marketing, Maintenance, Project Management, Propulsion, Strategic Technology, Structures, Systems, Thermodynamics, Supply Chain, and many more. My job at Core Product Development is to integrate the process and procedures of the entire BA organization into the Bombardier Manual Series of Documentation to be both used and reused for the entire product line. There is a lot of experiential organizational knowledge contained within BES.I coached and trained hundreds (probably thousands) of BA personnel, major partners, and supplier about how to use BES.Basically, I saw the nuts and bolts along with the 50,000-foot view of BA. I have a great feel of BA organization and product line.A detailed summary of BA experience is described further within this profile. Show less

Conceptualized the transformation from BES to PDS. Coordinate and Communicate with over 70 internal organizations (known as BES Functions), including RAMS Engineering, to standardize the manner that Product Development occurs across the BA entire product line for the entire life cycle. Defined generic Core Phase and Milestone Chart used across BA. As PDT Analyst - conceptualized and created a ten year plan (FY 2008-2018) for the BA Knowledge Management System in conjunction with Strategic Technology (STEC). As PDT Work Module Analyst created Aircraft Level Integration Function (INTG) and acted as Champion for six years. Bombardier Engineering System (BES) Analyst / Integrator responsible for Bombardier Manual Series of Documentation. Integrate and coordinate the preparation of Bombardier’s engineering design practices. Define phase and milestone for product contractual deliverable and associated procedures. Project integration activity to incorporate technical lessons learned into Bombardier Engineering documentation.BES Trainer responsibility to prepare and present design engineering training material to all BA engineering staff. The quality of my training as rated by trainees was tracked for 10 years. Each year I was ranked first, second, or third best trainer for the entire decade (2001-2010).Additional responsibility to define, document, and coordinate each engineering function’s technical documentation deliverable requirements among the four Bombardier Engineering sites of Belfast, Toronto, Wichita, and Montreal. Provided a (short term two month pre-agreed contract) technical evaluation for the software product RELEX reliability and maintainability computer aided engineering software. The RELEX developers wanted the perspective of how an actual Reliability and Maintainability Engineer used their product. I provided evaluation feedback during my short temporary assignment. In addition, when I worked at Innovative Software Design (ISD), and their product at that time was RELEX prediction tool. The day I met the Kevin V. who started up RELEX, Kevin saw a need for this prediction product. I shook his hand and told him "Thanks for this product!!! RELEX sure beats using a calculator or some poorly coded BASIC or VAX program to do this!". I used this RELEX many times since. Even after I left RELEX, I sold a few RELEX products to some energy, metals, and printed circuit board (PCB) companies. I am not really a sales engineer, but this was a good experience to provide a needed software tool to people who could truly use the RELEX to develop a more reliable product. And I liked the commission checks! RELEX as developed Innovative Software Design was acquired by several firms over time. Show less
