In September 2013 ElectroKinetic Solutions (EKS) was formed. EKS is a start up company that has developed an innnovative solution that may effectively and efficently manage oil sands tailings. Two years of Research and Development has resulted in a patented technology that applies electricity to the tailings seperating clay from water. The clay compacts and densifies and the expressed water may be recycled and used in the oil extraction phase. EKS is currently conducting tests at the 135 cu m scale and should these tests succeeded EKS anticipates full field demonstration in 2015. EKS is being suported by Alberta Innovates, Sustainable Developmment Technologies Canada and an oil sands operator.
