I was CEO at Central Garden & Pet and worked closely with Jim. He is a very strong leader and did a remarkable job transforming Central’s garden business from a collection of numerous siloed acquired companies into one integrated CPG operating unit. Jim had P&L responsibility for the garden group and was the driving force behind the garden vision and brought it to life. He designed, assembled and led his high-performing team. He drove the organization to be consumer driven and fact based in its decision making. He also was the driver of our innovation strategy and efforts behind our aggressive advertising programs. The garden business had strong growth during Jim’s tenure taking market share from our much larger competitor. Jim was considered a stand out and was an integral part of our succession planning. While Jim is a trained marketer, his overall business acumen including strategy, financial acumen, supply chain knowledge and ability to lead teams is exceptional. He was also very comfortable and a key asset in building top-to-top relationships with our key customers like Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes. I would highly recommend Jim in a senior operating role. On a personal level, Jim has a wonderful personal touch and was a true pleasure to work with.

I recruited Jim from Timex to come work for me at Remington Products. Jim and I worked together at Remington for ~5 years where we had a storybook run -- tripling sales and quadrupling EBITDA prior to a successful sale to Spectrum Brands. Jim was an instrumental piece of Remington’s success in our P&G oriented environment. He worked his way up from a young Brand Manager to senior director and then head of marketing/GM after the company was sold, replacing me after my decision not to relocate to Madison, WI. Jim rebuilt the team from scratch in Madison which showed his maturity and leadership skills although he was still relatively young at the time. Jim is one of those unique individuals who is both highly intelligent and intensely driven to succeed. He was a star athlete who was recognized by Remington’s leadership team and then Spectrum’s acquisition team. Jim is bright, strategic, analytical and extremely driven. His success stems from his stop at nothing to succeed attitude. He was well rounded and terrific at product development, developing ad copy and selling to our major customers like Walmart. While Jim and I have not worked together since Remington, we have stayed in close contact. I have taken both pleasure and pride in Jim’s success post Remington. I fully expect that success to continue throughout his career.

Chief Marketing Officer (P&L) - Garden, Board Member Tech Pac

2010 - 2014
Led transformation of Central's highly complex $800M+ Garden business with full branded P&L responsibility. Directly led 4 business unit General Managers (P&L owners) as well as VP Marketing, Shopper Marketing, Insights, and Creative Services groups. Central is the second largest consumer lawn & garden company consisting of numerous acquisitions in a very crowded and competitive space sold primarily through Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's and independent channels. Built team of 40+ from the ground up, hiring top CPG talent to move from siloed sales and operations approach to an integrated consumer-centric CPG model. Crafted and sponsored the vision with the BOD and Chairman. Sales grew by $90M between 2010 and 2013 taking share directly from main competitor in a flat/declining market. This followed 12 quarters of declining sales. Success driven by complete repositioning of brands, investment in digital and traditional media, innovation, aggressive claims vs. competition and disruptive in-store support. Vendor of the year at Home Depot in 2011 and Walmart in 2013. In 2011, was made board member for Controls partnership and in 2012 was given additional P&L responsibility for $100M+ 3rd party distribution business. Show less
