International Neuroethics Society Judge

The International Neuroethics Society, in collaboration with the International Youth Neuroscience Association, have collaborated for the past six years to host the Neuroethics Essay Contest which is open to high school students. This competition aims to promote interest in neuroethics among secondary school students around the world. Winning essays in the high school category will be jointly published on the INS website and featured in the IYNA journal, website, and newsletter.

The IYNA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with over 8,750 members across 125 countries. As the Director of the Modern Youth Education, Leadership, and Inquiry in Neuroscience (MYELIN) Initiative at the IYNA, I spurred the development of a free and accessible high school neuroscience curriculum consisting of 30 lessons divided into 7 modules aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. I led review by a team of educators and high school students in addition to running the MYELIN ambassador program focused on bringing neuroscience classroom materials and educational opportunities to the classroom setting. Initially, I worked interning for AP World History where I answered student questions and hosted joint live streams to teach other students. We also worked to provide company input. Being a student intern at the company became a role that has since diversified into many subsequent departments. As a research intern for the BioScience Project, I examined the comparison of gene expression patterns and neurodegenerative effects between Parkinson’s Disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. As a Presynaptic Project Member (formerly the GirlsGotSTEAM x Simply Neuroscience Collaboration), I created low-budget, hands-on neuroscience projects geared to promote gender, educational, and socioeconomic equity in STEAM for underprivileged youth. Each lesson consists of an Educator Guide, Presynaptic Project Presentation, and a student NeuroNotebook. These lessons have been used in workshops across countries that include the United States, Japan, Brazil, Turkey, and India.

In partnership with my Project Feed 1010 mentor, Rachel Calder, and fellow ambassador Linda Yan, I worked to compile educational resources and redesign the PF1010 website in Wordpress to include project tools, teaching resources, and community information. This will allow the PF1010 ambassadorship to extend to a greater global audience — spreading the mission of ISB to improve human, social, and environmental wellness. PF1010 was expanded to communities across Washington state during its four-year duration by 55 ambassadors. With my work as an ambassador in the 2019-2020 cohort on the website and in my community, aquaponics is now available for all interested citizen scientists, teachers, and students. Show less

As a Project Feed 1010 Ambassador at ISB, I worked to educate my community about sustainable agriculture and the environment. At local schools in my area, I am establishing aquaponics systems. I take measurements on these aquaponics systems, as well as my own, to contribute to the groundbreaking systems research at ISB. In addition, I present educational resources to teach students and members of my community how to create their own aquaponics systems. The Center for Neurotechnology (CNT) at the Bill and Melinda Gates Center on the University of Washington campus offers a Young Scholar's Program titled "REACH" during the summer. I received an introductory education to neuroscience, sensory substitution, neural engineering, neuroethics, computational neuroscience, scientific communication, and the latest developments in brain-computer interfaces and prosthetics. Through tours at CNT partner labs and departments including the AMP Lab, Reynolds Lab, Smith Lab, WISH Lab, Paul Allen Center for Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, and Chet Moritz's Lab, I gained elucidation about the groundbreaking work in the field of neural engineering. Additionally, YSP REACH provided me with preparation for post-secondary education at a university in the STEAM field as well as various opportunities for STEAM careers. Through this program, I gained new knowledge about neuroscience, garnered a college-level experience, and established valuable connections with likeminded peers and important members of the university faculty.
