Divemaster and Marine Ecologist
-
Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
As the marine ecologist I worked closely, supporting the marine scientist on site at the Sodwana Bay site. I taught marine biology in a classroom as well as in the field. In the classroom I assisted in the running of the lectures, as well as each week leading the introduction to coral reefs lecture. I also taught any lectures that the marine scientist could not make; therefore over my time there I taught most of syllabus independently. In the evenings I ran creative activities as well giving talks on sustainability to the volunteers. In the field I led marine ecology dives and shore snorkels, to follow up what the volunteers learned in the lectures. As well as this I taught introduction to ecological surveying on the rocky shore as well as giving dune walks to increase their understanding of the interactions between the terrestrial and marine systems. For the dive training we worked with Sodwana Bay Lodge Scuba Centre. When I was not doing the above, I was helping with the for the Padi open water course. I was in the pool for the confined and sat in on the classes; but I was mainly helping to make up ratios for the open water component. I assisted with dives 1 through to 4. Diving in Sodwana bay gave me experience in diving different sorts of challenging conditions. I gained experience in diving and training in high surge conditions. Show less

Whilst working with Diving Oasis, I was in charge of running the day to day activities of a PADI training centre as a more land based dive master. I did all the bookings, sales, paperwork and compressing as well as looking after the kit store and getting all the lessons prepped for the instructors. As a DSD leader I taught nearly a 120 people through the discover scuba diving course. As well as DSD’s I ran scuba reviews and I also assisted with open water confined lessons as well PADI seal team and bubble maker classes. Show less

Divemaster and volunteer

Jan 2012 - May 2012
During my four months at Coral Cay Conservation, I underwent an intensive two weeks of scientific development in which I learnt how to identify all fish, invertebrate and coral species present in Sogod Bay and the Indo-Pacific region that are considered to be target species for marine conservation. I conducted multiple types of SCUBA based surveys such as Baseline, MPA, Coral Watch, Gastropod and Reefcheck. As a professionally qualified diver, my responsibilities included leading diver groups and surveys. Furthermore, to increase my scientific skills, I was in charge of shore and boat marshalling, diver safety and recording diver status in logbooks. This required organisation skills and awareness of safety procedures Show less
