I met Joseph several years ago when he was still in med-school, studying his text books intently, and even listening to them on tape whenever he was in his car. Now and back then, two of Joseph’s character traits that stand out to me are his exceptionally calm demeanor and his personability. Joseph is one of the most down-to-earth and modest persons I have met in my life. At the same time, he radiates a zen-like confidence which is hard to capture in writing. Even though very knowledgeable, especially in his main area of expertise, otolaryngology, he excels at asking questions and providing answers right at the level of knowledge of his patients. Joseph adapts seamlessly to his patients. When talking to people without a medical background, he explains everything in a straight-forward manner – in layman’s terms, if necessary – while still covering important details exhaustively. I know from personal experience that he does that very professionally, conveying empathy and the utmost respect for his patients. In the past, I have worked as a systems engineer on research projects involving prototypes for medical devices. During this time, I often came to Joseph looking for a professional perspective. I have been truly impressed with Joseph’s knowledge of publications and renowned specialists both inside and outside of his area of medical expertise. Joseph has become a trusted source of mine concerning questions about common health care practices in general, but also about my personal health and the health of my family. On more than one occasion has he been able to point me into the right direction when it came to choosing a new primary care physician or over-the-counter medication to help with recovery from the common cold or similar issues. More importantly, in a far more serious case, he was quick to provide a recommendation for one of the best specialists in the country, and I could not have been more satisfied with his advice and the final outcome. Personally, I wish the average physician was like Joe, but he is an outstanding example for his profession. He is an asset as a friend in my personal network, and I strongly believe that his personal and professional qualities also make him an asset for every clinic and hospital.
