I am a biologist from UNAM. I then obtained an MSc in Marine Science at CICESE. Then I had PhD thesis at EPHE, France. With a repatriation and retention fellow from CONACYT-CINVESTAV, I began working at CINVESTAV-Unidad Mérida in 1994, where I am currently a researcher. I have founded the Laboratorio de Ecologia de Ecosistemas de Arrecifes Coralinos (LEEAC). My research interests include four primary areas related to coral reef ecology: landscape ecology; ecosystem diversity and function; resilience and connectivity in reefs of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. While at CINVESTAV, I have also been able to work abroad. I had a fellowship from the Education Ministry of France from 1996 to 1998 to conduct coral reef research in collaboration with the Centre de Biologie et d'Ecologie Tropicale et Mediterranéenne. In 2002, I did a sabbatical at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. In 2008, I participated in a sabbatical year at the University of Exeter. In Mexico, I am a founding member of the Consejo Científico y Técnico de los Arrecifes Coralinos and its first president. I am also a founding member of the Sociedad Mexicana de Arrecifes Coralinos. I have also participated in various national and international macro projects among which the GEF-Coral Reef Targeted Research on connectivity and modelling for management and decision-making regarding coral reefs, the Mexican Ecosystem Network-CONACyT stand out and GASPAR-CESAB-FRB. I am a Mexican Senior Research Fellow-CONACyT (SNI III) and an active member of the Mexican Academy of Science, and International and Mexican Coral Reef Societies. I was recognized by the Research Conservation Nature 2017 price by the Comisión Nacional de Areas Protegidas of Mexico. I have trained 7 Post-docs, 20 PhD students, 27 MSc students and 14 undergraduate students in coral reef ecology. Show less
